Install VMWare Tools on a physical machine? posted: Jan 10, 2008 4:19 PM

Good evening,

I was wondering if there are any potential issues with installing the VMWare Tools for Windows on a physical (non-VM) machine. I frequently copy my work machine into a VM on my MacBook Pro when traveling, to avoid carrying two laptops. I have this down to an art, but I'd like to skip having to install the VMWare Tools each time when I first boot into the VM. So...
1) Can I install the VMWare Tools on a physical machine? Is there anything about the installer that would prevent it?
2) Will they impact the physical machine in any way? I would assume not, since the drivers wouldn't be loaded by Windows.
3) Will they function properly and seamlessly come up when I copy this machine to a VM, or is this all for naught?

Thanks!

I think the installer checks that it is being run in a VM, if not, it aborts.

Right.

If you could somehow install them, I would expect it to work (it's similar to a Boot Camp setup). I'm just not sure how you can install them initially.

Run Regmon or Filemon and see what all it's checking during the setup?

One would think a highly technical user would not even have to ask! :)

It would be nice if there was a /force flag. I have a VM that doesn't think it's a VM. I'm running in ESX, but when I try to install the VMWare tools it tells me that they need to be installed in a VM. I'm not sure why they can't detect that it is a VM.

Use Orca to alter the MSI transform file and remove the "Am I running in a VM?" check.
