I was able to successfully set up the Macbook Pro built-in iSight USB camera using the driver on the Boot Camp disk.

Is it possible to do the same with Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5?

VMware
You need iSight drivers. AFAIK Apple only has 32-bit Windows drivers, so you'll need some open source alternative. I'm not sure what the status of iSight support in Linux is in general, and you might be better off asking in a RHEL5-centric forum.

I did post on the Red Hat customer support site. I'll see what I get. Thanks.

For a linux isight driver check out:

Linux USB Video Class Linux device driver and Apple iSight driver 0.1.0-d

If the iSight driver doesn't work you can try the supported UVC web cams.

No such luck. I already had tried to compile the Apple iSight driver, but is is based on a set of kernel source not compatible with Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5. The USB Class Linux device driver is based on similar code, and also won't compile either.

Without Apple support for iSight on Linux, your case may be a common stopping point. You could try to petition Apple while getting the open-source team(s) to look at the showstoppers in RHEL's kernel versions. RHEL kernel variants (EL) are a recurring problem with that distribution.

Is there any version of Linux supported by VMware Fusion where people have been able to set up and use a USB Webcam like the iSight?

Well this exact version of Ubuntu is not supported by VMware Fusion (not 100%) but getting iSight to work in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) is waaaay too easy using this Ubuntu forums posting:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=225621

The GStreamer test popped right up with my mug after running ./isight_install.sh. iSight in Linux - definitely possible. Linux kernel:
Linux ubuntu710 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Cool. I'll definitely try it. Did you use Ubuntu Desktop or Ubunto Server 7.10. I did see that it is not officially supported, but I was going to give it a try. I am assuming I'll have to install the VMware Tools using the Perl script, right?

It's Ubuntu 7.10 desktop. Yes, VMware Tools are installed via the vmware-install.pl script. You may want to patch the script as described in this message: Re: Ubuntu 7.10 (and other) mouse/display: Problem and solution

The patch script supposedly works only with the Final Fusion 1.10. I have the original Fusion 1.0 CD and the downloaded Fusion 1.1 DMG. Where do I get the 1.1 VMware Tools for Linux? Thanks.

The Tools for Linux are part of the Fusion 1.1 installation/upgrade. Once you're running 1.1, start up Ubuntu (or any Linux) and choose Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools, then linux.iso will be automounted for you. The path to the install tarball is /media/cdrom (Tools CD icon should appear on the desktop too). You can open a Terminal window and start the process then.

Hm, I've tried that in both RHLE and Ubuntu and no Tools CD icon appears on the desktop. I'll try later today to see from terminal if the linux.iso is automounted or not.

If the Desktop icon does not appear and you do not have assess thru /media/cdrom then you may have to just mount the ISO manually in the CD/DVD settings. The path to the linux.iso is:

/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/linux.iso

Edit: Forgot to say don't click on Install VMware Tools menu command if your mounting the ISO manually.
