Background: I want to exclude non OS drives from VCB backups and setting independent mode is the only way I have figured out how to do this.
Issue: I am trying to do a storage vmotion with a VM and the second disk is in Independent | Persistent mode. The admin guide indicates that the requirement is "Virtual machine disks must be in persistent mode or be raw device maps." The migration fails and the error I get is "Received an error from the server: Virtual machine is configured to use a device that prevents migration: fault.NonPersistentDisksNotSupported.summary".
I wondered if there would be problems because the process uses snapshots, but the admin guide and the error message do not indicate that Independent disks are necessarily bad. What am I missing - the disk is in a different sort of persistent mode, but it is persistent. I am sure the system could manage a snapshot while disallowing user snaps.
