I think it was posted here that the browsers plugins for Mac won't make the GA release of Server 2.0. I don't know about BSD, though. Would the Linux plugins work on BSD as well?

Basically main problem with Web Ui is that console embedded into web browser is causing many problems. On my computer is completely unusable with Intenet Explorer. Everytime when I'm trying to use console with IE browser just hangs and I have to kill process. With FireFox works fine but is crashing browser from time to time.

If there will be no improvement in this area I think people will not upgrade to VMware Server 2.0. Previous console was fine and stable. I've seen on webcast that there is a possibility to manage VMware Server 2.0 with Virtual Infrastructure Client but the only source where this application is available is VI3. Apart of that it looks like ot manage VMware Server 2.0 using VI3 client Virtual Center should be installed which is not good as well.

I'm using VMware Server 2.0 as my test and experimental platform at home and before version 2.0 I had no issues with using it. Now I'm struggling how to bring this thing to live properly (not VMware Server 2.0 itself but management interface).

At the moment is a wasting-time. Instead concern around lab environment and what I want to do I have to pray to console not to crash my browser :D

Maybe you have any good news at this stage that this issue is solved and hyper-improved console component has been released ?? ;-)

To provide more details about my environment I'm using laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate on it, IE7, FireFox 2.0.0.9.

The new web gui is insanely slow and ugly. I got as far as configuring a VM, and was wondering where the touted USB2.0 support was as I couldn't add any USB devices to the VM. Then I couldn't figure out where you put the client. I had no way to view the VM, so no way to install a guest OS. Maybe if I had time to read some docs I could eventually figure it out, but it took much less time to uninstall it and put server 1.0.4 back on.

My Host is Fedora 8 / 32bit.

Some extra thoughts !

1) My existing 1.0.4 vmwsvr only has 320M RAM (host OS CentOS w/o any X or GUI with 2 x Red Hat 8 64M guests) so there is now way i could let 200M be eaten up by the "new UI" !

2) However I don't have a problem installing real firefox since the distro build on Ed/X/Ubuntu is seriously flawed so I now always delete it and install genuine firefox instead !

Good grief, I have not used a java/web application yet that worked correctly and quickly. Using Java and a Browser type interface is like using a mule to power a race car, its just too slow and unreliable. The underlying structure for both packages are constantly changing. Everytime an update is applied, you risk hosing your work. Not to mention what people do to browsers surfing, yikes.............

Currently I have an message popping up starting VMware, the certificate is not trusted. I have an "Unknown (inaccessable)" virtual machine that cannot be removed. Newly created VMs do not start, hangs without any way to kill or stop the load.

A communication error occurred while sending data to the server
Please help me with this problem.

Mine doesn't work at all on a Linux Amd 64 bit machine. After attempting to login I get Web service URL malformed.

You'll need to create an official SR (its FREE for beta customers). VMware do not generally help with or fix problems that are only posted on forums

bkolin wrote:Performance improvements are on the schedule for upcoming releases. In terms of paradigm, are there issues besides performance that cause you to not like a web user interface? Browser versions, feature set, etc?

Issue #1: Browser compatibility. My primary browser is IE7 on Vista with UAC enabled. I can't get the console plug-in to run under IE unless I run iexplore.exe as Administrator. As non-administrator, I get long lockup followed by an Invalid Handle popup. Firefox works as a normal user after running firefox.exe as Administrator once to properly install the plug-in.

Issue #2: Display real estate. After initial configuration of VMs, 99% of my time in VMware Infrastructure Web Access will be spent in VM Consoles, and I can't even fit a 1024x768 console on my screen (1680x1050) due to the 40% of the display being wasted by the web browser and other frames that I don't care about.

Hmm! I am not sure, it sounds like you are saying that you can only connect
to VMware server using web UI. But I think it is not true. I installed VMware
server 2.0 Beta 1 on my XP SP2 work station and was able to successfully
connect using my Virtual Center Console 2.0.2 Build 63231. Also in this build
it is much more detail than old VMware server console 1.4, which didn't allow
you to have the real time performance graph, map options, open new console and
many other features.

However when click you help - about; you will see that the VMware server
shows up as: ESX version e.x.p Build 63231.

I completely agree. The web interface is a pain. Please give us the console back :)

Theeeere we go :)

Can you tell me from where I can get it ? We have the ESX server here, so if it's included on there, that's fine.

If I have to download it, from where do I download it ?

:)

FYI:

While I don't know if this was a build mistake, the VMware Console fat client does still exist with VMware Server 2 Beta. Look in the \VMware\VMwareServer directory. The vmware.exe program is the fat client. However, it no longer appears to want to connect to the server. There could be some configuration options hidden somewhere to enable it (or not).

So, there is hope.

Myself, I would be happy if they produces a Mac OSX version of the Firefox plugin considering VMware Fusion is released and the company seems to want Mac users.
