Hello Guys,

this week I had my first VI-3 installation. I installed 3 ESX 3.0.2 Server and a VC 2.0.2 MGMT-server under W2K3 R2 SP2. After some problems the system seems to run passably.. ;) But two things are a liitle bit strange.

I installed a Windows 2003 STD R2 Server with Sp2 and created a template to deploy several other servers from it. During the deployment wizard I tried to customize the new VM. First I copied sysprep ( version 1.1 ) in my VMWare/VC2.02/recources/windows directory. After that I start the deployment wizard an change things like computer-name, network settings, serial number and so on.... But during the cloning/creation process of my VM an error occured and the task fails. If I create a new VM from my template without customizing it, everything works fine...

Is there an incompatibility with W2k3 R2 SP2 and VC 2.0.2? Or should I use a specific version of sysprep?

The other problem concerns the VMWare Tools Installation. After installing a W2K3 R2 SP2 VM the VMWare tools files are not mounted into the cdrom drive of the guest. I right click on the vm-icon and say: "install vmware tool" after a few seconds a error occures: failed to install vm tools : an internal error occures. I looked closer to this thing an find out, that the VMWare tools were not mounted in the guests CD-Rom Drive. I tried different settings for the cd-rom drive ( use client-drive, use host-drive...) but the error still occurs.
Then I imported a W2K3 Std Server with SP1 installed via VMWare Converter an tried to install VMWare tools - everything works fine!!! I copied the mounted files to a network share to install it on the other servers. The installation works fine.... But for easier usage for the customer , the installation during the VC is a must...

Have anybody some ideas to solve my problems??

Thanks for your help in advance, and sorry for my bad Englisch... ;)

Kind Regards

Benjamin

sysprep needs to be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep\1.1 on your virtual centre server

hi doubleH,

thats interesting ;) I thought I have to copy the sysprep files under C:/Program files/Vmware/Virtual Center/resources/windows/sysprep/1.1/

I'll try your suggestion on monday! I think the problem will be solved in that way... ;)

The other problem with the mounting error of vmware tools still occurs..

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

Wittbert

You need to use the version of sysprep from the windows 2k3 R2 disk (its basically the same at the one that comes with SP1).

And put it here: c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep\svr2003

Thats per this: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_admin_guide.pdf , page 345.

Worked for me without a hiccup..

I just wish you could resize the drive as you deploy from the template...

Hi!

Thanks for this hin! I'll try this next monday at the customer's site. Im anixious if this works ;)

The problem with the mounting of vmware-tools was caused by a broken symbolic link on 2 esx servers.... I rebuilt the symbolic links and the mountuing process works fine now...

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards

Benjamin
