Screen resolution w/Linux

Hello,

I am running Fedora 6 (guest OS) through VM Player on Vista. It is working extremely well, but I am confined to the default 600x800 resolution when I run it on full screen. I have tried every option in Fedora that I can think of, but nothing so far has worked. My searches of the forums turn up results for using VM Tools, but for VM Workstation. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need to install VMware Tools - they work with Player as well.

Yeah as Oreeh notes, you need to have the Tools running in your VM. Without the tools, your VM is using the stock VESA driver which doesn't perform well and doesn't support very high resolutions (although I think if you manually edit the file you can get it up t0 1280x1024 or maybe 1600x1200).

The easiest way to get the Tools into a VM is to open it in Workstation and run the Tools installer. Note that Workstation is a free download with a 30-day trial period.

Once you've got the tools running, you can set the behavior for what to do when you go fullscreen. For example, you can have the VM automatically resize itself to match the resolution of your host when running in fullscreen.

When will the tools be part of player again?

You have two options (you do not need to install Workstation). The first option is extracting the vmware-tools ISO image from the Workstation tar.gz and mounting that ISO in Player. Proceed with installing the tools just like you would in Workstation. Second option is getting the tools from http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net (VMware have open-sourced the tools).

Personally, I'm using the first approach and it works like a charm. Simply mount the ISO, install the RPM as root, type "vmware-config-tools.pl" as root in a terminal and follow the prompts.
