Add a virtual wireless card

Hello all,

I need to diagnose an access point connection, and for that I need a virtual wireless card (on Windows host).

With the built in card in the vmware software, the host is first get a connection with the AP, and the guest see a wired LAN.

There is any way can I install/add/configure a virtual network card that will communicate including authorization with the AP?

Thanks in advanced

Your guest will ALWAYS see a wired NIC.  If you want your guest to use your's host's wireless NIC, run the Virtual Network Editor.  Disable automatic bridging; then specify your wireless NIC to be bridged to VMnet0.

Hello,

RDPetruska's answer will work for VMware Workstation and perhaps VMware Server but NOT for ESX. This is a discussion forum for ESX (VI3). Are you discussing how to do this in ESX?

Best regards,

Edward

No, he's not.

>(on Windows host).

Once he answers Eric's question, we can move the post to the appropriate forum.  In the meantime, my answer should suffice.

Re: Add a virtual wireless card

Hello,

I have used Wireless USB devices for a Wireless Security class once. It worked extremely well using Workstation 5 and even better with 6... Never tried it under Server however.

Best regards,

Edward

Re: Add a virtual wireless card

Here's the server forum.   If you have a USB wireless card you should be able to pass that through to the guest OS.

Not a problem, the moderator's move the posts to the correct forum for you. This post has already been moved to the VMware Server forum which is the correct forum for this post.

Re: Add a virtual wireless card

Yes, the only way a virtual machine will see an actual wireless network adapter is if it is a USB device attached to the VM
