Unable to install Solaris 10u3 64 bit on ESX server 3.0.1 on v20z posted: Aug 30, 2007 6:19 AM

I am unable to install solaris 10u3 (10/06) 64 bit on v20z box as a guest operating system. Even if I choose 64 bit during the configuration of VM, the installation is only 32 bit.

I am using ISO image connected as CD rom on the target server.

Please help me with some tips/tricks.

You will need to check that you have a 64 bit processor. Solaris will not install 64 bit on a 32 bit processor. With the 64 bit processor, Solaris 10 x86 installs with no problems. Our physical hardware consists of IBM LS20 servers with AMD 64 bit chips. We have Solaris 10 x86 64 bit running with no issues.

Mike,

v20z has a 64 bit processor. Some friends of mine are able to install 64 bit but they migrated from a different VMWare product to ESX (i am a newbie and hence can't recollect all details properly). If I am installing solaris as the base OS, 64 bit installations are proceeding fine. Hence I believe that the limitation is not with the processor.
