Migrating a VM from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1

Just want to check on this prior to actually doing it.

I have two hosts -

1) ESX 3.5 - not connected to vCentre

2) ESX 4.1 Connected to vCenter

They do share a datastore and the VM I wish to move is located in that datastore

Just want to make sure that I am not going to hit a hidden snag on this with the steps I think I need to follow :

1) power down the VM on the ESX3.5 host

2) remove VM from host's inventory

3) browes the datastore from the ESX 4.1 host and add it to the inventory.

4) power on the VM on it's new host.

Like I said I just want to ensure that I am not missing something because of the introduction of vCenter in to the mix - Currently the 3.5 host is associated with our Lab Manager 2.5 implementation (which we are phasing out and replacing with a fresh Lab Manager 4.0 implementation) which is not connected to vCenter.

Thanks in advance.

John

yes, that will work. However, if you need/want to go back to your VI3 Host, don't upgrade the virtual hardware.

Thank you for the quick response - I will close the question after I have migrated the VM (The VM in question is outside of Lab Manager and is used in production so it will have to happen off hours )

John

Hi

You can follow that steps without any issue. When you are sure of VM is working fine, you can upgrade the VMware tools and then upgrade the virtual hardware (in that order).

Remember to make a backup of VM prior make the virtual hardware upgrade, in case you need to go back to ESX 3.5.

Just to echo what Troy said but it should work without any problems. The hardware version 7 is dependent on vSphere and above. VMware does say that you can go back but I saw this post on twitter awhile back that shows how to take it back. This would be untested of course so be careful if you tried it
