I have begun building anetwork on VMWare Workstation but have
come across a slight issue. In the Virtual Network Editor i have
configured a new connection on VMnet2, it is utilising the NAT connection method, whilst at the same time a host virtual adapter and
local DHCP service to distribute IP's.
Now the IP's have
successfully been distributed with all VM's on the designed network
(192.168.60.0) yet i am unable to ping from one VM to another. I am also unable to ping from my external host to VM which is strange as they work the other way around.
I have included my ip configuration below:
On my external host the ipconfig output is as follows:
Ethernet adapter local area connection 2:
Connection-specific DNS suffix: bolton.ac.uk
IP Address - 172.16.3.146
Subnet Mask - 255.240.0.0
Default Gateway - 172.16.0.254
Connection-specific DNS suffix: (Not specified)
IP Address - 192.168.60.1
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 172.168.60.1
My VM's are below:
Machine 1: IP Address - 192.168.60.128
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.60.2
Machine 2: IP Address - 192.168.60.129
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.60.1
Machine 3: IP Address - 192.168.60.130
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.60.1
Machine 4: IP Address - 192.168.60.131
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.60.1
If anyone could assist me in correcting this i'd be grateful. thanks
Welcome to the forums!
Why do you create a NAT network if one exists already? VMnet8.
However,...
the default gateway on all guests participating in a NAT network must be the VMnet8 IP address of the host +1. In your case that is 2.
You can't ping a guest which uses NAT from the outside because you use...NAT. The IP address of the guest is not reachable so you have to ping the IP address from the host. But how should the host know if this ping is for him or the guest. Therefore you need to configure NAT port forwarding under VMware to route specific ports, coming from the outside, to the guest. Only UPD and TCP ports can be rerouted, not ICMP.
Please post the complete IP setup using "ipconfig /all" (Windows) or "ifconfig -a" (Linux). If you have the latter, add the default gateway and DNS server IP addresses you use.

Ok i am currently using the default VMnet8 NAT adapter, from all VM's i am able to ping the host but unable to ping from VM to VM i want all VM's to be able to ping each other as i am trying to create a virtual network.
The ipconfig/all outputs from all machines are listed below:

Your IP setup looks fine.
Do you ping by name or IP address? If you use the name, do you use the FQDN or only the host name?
Disable all firewalls on the guest (be aware that some virus protection software also have firewalls, like Trend Micro).
