Please Help: New to VM's

Please help me figure this out. I have a macbook pro 2.53Ghz 250GB HD. I have installed VMware Fusion and allocated 60GB to Windows 7. My problem is my windows VM is filling up fast. I would like to put the Windows VM on a external harddrive, and be able to access it through VMware Fusion. I would like advice on what type of harddrive to get and how to format it. Also please let me know if I copy my Windows VM to a external HDD can I then delete/erase the Windows VM on the Mac HDD?

I know this is probably elementary to alot of you. But could someone walk me through this step by step? I really cant afford to loose the information I have on either the Mac or Windows 7 side.

Also, I would like to know how to increase the size of the Windows VM once it is on the external HDD.

Thanks in advance
