I am just finishing off the migration of all of my ESX servers from 2.5 and 3.0.1 to ESX 3.5 Update 3. I have changed the storage design and introduced DRS and HA clusters, configured VMotion for every server and created one single Datastore for ISOs and Templates (before there was no control of the amount of space being used by templates and ISOs)
I have seen templates (or so called templates) with a C:\ drive of 6GB and 2 or 3 empty disks with anything up to 100GB assigned!! It’s crazy wasting all that valuable SAN.
So now with my nice new clean environment and with all 32 ESX servers updated and the possibility to move maintenance hours to a move reasonable time of the day (Thanks to VMotion and storage VMotion) I am faced with the next project of virtualizing at leats 400 servers more and expanding the virtual CPD to include SRM and high availability I am asking questions such as when is ESX 4 coming out, when will I finally be able to avail of VMware FT?
What new features can I expect to find with vSphere or VI4 (we have all heard about Surface Optics Corporation and their claim of trademark on the vSphere name)
One suggestion that I have is to please, please sort out support for USB devices, I would love to be able to plug my usb key into my ESX and access the contents via a VM without the need for 3rd party applications.
So far we have the following information available related to products due to be released in 2009:

… Please hurry up VMware.. we want VI4 now ;)
