If you attended VMworld 2009 and listened to Steve Herrod's key note you would have heard him discussing how to make an ESX cluster (he refered to it as a giant computer) as efficient as possible. The key element to achieve this is Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS). DRS uses on one of the most powerful features of ESX - VMotion for balancing workloads across datacenters. Steve called DRS a 'MATCHMAKER' - matching resource requirements of virtual machines with available hardware resources.
