I believe you will have to use 'sudo' before running the command. Open a terminal window and navigate to the location that you installed the files. After that type 'sudo xxxxxxx.xxx' (I forget the exact name of the file to run but basically replace the xxxxxx.xxx with the correct filename) and just accept the defaults. This will install it for you. Basically your standard account does not have admin rights per se. Using sudo allows the program to function as a SU.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Kevin

VMware Fusion menu bar > Help > VMware Fusion Help > Creating Virtual Machines > Installing and Upgrading VMware Tools > To Install or upgrade VMware Tools in a Linux virtual machine from the command line with the tar installer

Note: Ubuntu 8.04 at the present time is not supported and the version of VMware Tools shipped with Fusion does not properly install. See VMware Fusion 1.1.2 and Ubuntu 8.04/Linux 2.6.24 - Step By Step for a workaround.
