Are you installing MSDE or using an ODBC connection to something like MS SQL Server?

Hi,

SQL Express 2005 does not come with the SQL Agent which needs to be present to perform stats collections and rollups of historical perfomance data.

Express should not be used for production it is only for evaluations.

The error is caused when the agent is not present.

i'm only using it for our test environment, not production. our test environment consists of 2 x ESX hosts and i'm trying to load virtual centre on a VM. i'm using virtual centre 2.5 update 1 installation that installs a version of SQL express as well. installation goes well untill the part where it is trying to configure virtual centre database. at this point installation fails everytime with the error message posted above. I might create another VM and try VC install on that.

Since it's just a test environment you do not need to run SQL Express use SQL 2000 MSDE and you will not need to mess around with SQL 2005. There is no function difference since it is just a DB in the background.

You need to download:

Microsoft SQL Server Native Client

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Command Line Query Utility

Why doesn't VC run in Linux??? meh....

Still seeing this issue even after installing the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Command Line Query Utility. Anyone continue to have this problem. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition SP1 Intel Xeon. I have even uninstalled all the MS SQL Applications then re-installed CLient and Command Line utility.
