ubuntu upgrade 6.06 LTS to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS - cannot upgrade vmware tools

testing and ubuntu upgrade from 6.06 to 8.04. had vmware tools installed successfully on dapper but hardy is giving me a bit more trouble.

Upgraded the release to hardy, ran all normal updates, uninstalled (and tried by NOT uninstalling) old vmware tools. installed the new kernel sources, tried installing vmware tools (newest, and on esx 3.5) and it cant seem to compile the modules.

error conflicting types for `poll_initwait`

error previous declaration of poll_initwait

the same poll_initwait errors for all other modules that try to compile. I just cant for the life of me figure this out. I've tried with open-vmware tools with no luck. I have installed open vmware tools in conjunction with vmware tools on 8.04 fresh install with no problems, but not on this upgraded system.

This looks like it could be the 2.6.24 kernel problem with VMWare tools. There is a fix, merging the Open Source VMware Tools.

Thanks, i've used those posts as a guide to install vmware tools on ubuntu 8.04 fresh, however there seems to be something that breaks that process when you are working with 8.04 that has been upgraded from 6.x.

Hello,

I just updated the wiki page with a download of a the script to accomplish the merge. 'mergetools.sh' Place this and the open-vm-tools*gz package in the same directory and execute.
