problem with VM Ware Fusion / Boot Camp WinXPsp3 partition posted: Jun 24, 2008 9:57 AM

hi everyone. first post here.

i installed windows xp professional sp3 on my macbook via Boot Camp with no problems. it boots natively fine. i want VMWare Fusion to operate off of the same Boot Camp partition.

installed VMWare Fusion, and it detected my Boot Camp parition. it won't boot properly, however. every time I boot, after 2 seconds of the windows XP boot screen, i get the following blue-screen:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If thie screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

i have attached a screen of the blue screen here. any advice would be extremely helpful. thanks.

Try by changeing the below parameter in Configuration (vmx) file.

(Macintosh HD/Users/User Name/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmx)

Change scsi0.present = "TRUE" to scsi0.present = "FALSE"

thanks for the info. the first fix with the registry edits did not help.

how do i go about editing the .vmx file? sorry, i'm a new mac user.

thx.

EDIT: found out how to edit .vmx. didn't help my problem.

nevermind... figured out how to alter that file.

the SCSI fix does not work either. i'm still getting the same error.

i have 4GB or memory installed - i'm sure that shouldn't affect anything, but FYI.

any additional help would be appreciated. after hearing all of the great things about VMWare Fusion, i'm losing patience.

Make sure the following files exist:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\intelide.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\i8042prt.sys

If they don't then you will need to copy them from the following possible locations:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Or

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp3.cab
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab

Whichever contains the newest version.

thank you for this information. i actually tracked this down a couple of hours before you got back to me, and combined with the SCSI = "FALSE" edit AND the MS registry edit, seemed to do the trick.

(for those of you experiencing the same problems, please
reference http://communities.vmware.com/message/944008 and read to the
string to understand the fixes i'm referring to).

i found the required files in C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp3.cab and used WINZip to Expand them out of the .cab file and drop them in the appropriate folders.

i'm pretty disappointed to find out that this problem is fairly common and has been around for months now, without a formal fix from VMWare. that is a few hours of my life that i am never going to get back. i'm going to think twice before choosing to invest in another one of their products.

I also had this problem and found the solution at MS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401/ It's not strictly a Fusion issue as much as a Windows issue. On Windows SP2 and earlier they installed the IDE controller drivers "just in case" on SP3, in some cases they don't, (like my MacBook Pro 1st gen 1.8 Ghz.) Under Boot Camp XP SP3 installer installs only the SATA driver for the Mac's Intel SATA controller. Fusion uses a virtual IDE controller, the drivers simply aren't there.

Strangely enough a fellow co-worker with a newer MacBook didn't have any problems, installed Windows SP3 under Boot Camp, set it all up, re-booted to OS X, installed Fusion, ran it, and selected the Boot Camp partition, ran like a charm.

It would be good for the VMware team to put this in a FAQ or something for easy reference. AND perhaps a .zip file of the missing files so that people could easily put them in the appropriate places.

Took me a full day to find the solution myself, but it works great now...

Part of the Boot Camp preprocessing that happens the first time you run a Boot Camp virtual machine is supposed to do this (other parts include making sure mouse/keyboard drivers are installed). However, it may fail in some cases (e.g. registry is too fragmented, drivers are missing, etc.).

It would be good for the VMware team to put this in a FAQ or something for easy reference.

For what it's worth, it is mentioned in both Frequently Asked Questions about VMware Fusion and Frequently Asked Questions about Guest OSes.

We can't distribute the drivers, as they're Microsoft's.
