Windows 2008 VM on ESX 3.0.1 ? posted: Jun 12, 2008 2:46 AM

I am using ESX v3.0.1, build 32039.

I have built some Windows 2008 VM's by setting the Guest OS type to "Windows Vista". I then installed the VMware tools drivers.

In the 2008 guests, the network adapter appears to be installed correctly. However, when I try to ping another 2008 VM I get this error:

Destination host unreachable

The VM can ping itself OK. I have tried disabling the Windows firewall on the VM's with no luck.

I know that officially Windows 2008 is only supported on ESX v3.5. However, I am not ready to upgrade my ESX farm yet. So, does anyone know how to get this working or am I forced to upgrade to ESX v3.5?

Many thanks.

What are the IP addresses of your VM's ? Can you ping your default gateway if you have one?

I agree, sounds like a driver issue, I know you are using an older version of ESX but have you tried the latest version of VMtools ?

Can anyone supply the latest vmware tools drivers? Particularly the NIC drivers for 2008?

It's about 100Mb in size so attaching to this thread isn't really an option.
Just burn the iso image to a CD, insert the CD in a system, open folder /VMware/RPMS
Get the file VMware-esx-tools-3.5.0-82663.i386.rpm (this is the name on ESX3.5 U1) and install it on your 3.0.x host.... or instead of installing it is probably better to untar the rpm and get the windows.iso from folder /./vmimages/tools-isoimages/ (>22Mb in size, still to big to attach)
