We had this problem today in which many of the machines on a cluster with HA and DRS enabled is showing as ghost. Please let me know how to troubleshoot the problem and a probable cause for this.

There can be several reasons behind this issue. The most prabable is that the external storage on which the machines are stored has got offline. You can check vmkernel logs of any ESX host in the cluster to confirm this.
Also are the machines which are showing orphan still available on network?
