I have VMWare Fusion on my Mac and just downloaded Fedora 9 and installed it with the Gnome interface. In the past I've installed OpenSUSE w/ KDE, Ubuntu w/Gnome, and Mandriva w/KDE and rarely have a problem but can't get it to work this time. Is there any special procedure to install VMWare Tools on Fedora 9?

At the present time Fedora 9 is not a Supported Guest OS.

For VMware Tools have a look at Getting VMWare tools working in Fedora 9... an interesting experience... and VMware Fusion 1.1.2 and Ubuntu 8.04/Linux 2.6.24 - Step By Step.

Hi Mark,

Yes, as WoodyZ answered - I have vmware-tools working on Fedora 9... I spent a few days learning how to do it. The link (an interesting experience...) is where I explained how to do it. - this was using stuff I found via google... You have to merge the 'open vm tools' - with the standard distribution - and this requires getting the 'kernel-devel' rpm. The standard dvd's kernel-devel stuff didn't hack it - so, I had to go through the 'custom kernel stuff' - the way to get to that is also in my previous post... ;-)

Don't worry with 'patching' the kernel - you can have the 'stock distribution kernel' - and the 'default build kernel' you make - peacefully co-existing (simultaneously installed)... - and the vmware tools work swimmingly! :-) In other words - do the 'Custom Kernel document' - (using the '--without pae --without debug' options on the 'rpmbuild -bb ' line... that will build 'the rpms' for your build in the directory /home/*you*/rpmbuild/RPMS/<arch>/). Then do the install of the NEW kernel... (the 'kernel-2.6.25...'rpm)... this sets /boot/grub/menu.lst file to default to the new kernel... - restart the machine... then, install the rpm in the above mentioned RPMS directory that starts with 'kernel-devel')... NOW, you can do the procedure to install vmware tools. (the stock VMWARE tools - I got by just doing the 'install vmware tools' from the fusion 1.1.2 menu - then, I got the latest open tools using yum... after that, it's a piece of cake... ;-) ).

I hope you enjoy them.

All the Best!, Carl...

yum install kernel-headers kernel-devel xinetd
yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Legacy Software Development"
reboot
Install VMWare Tools 'From Client'
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
tar -xvf VMwareTools-3.5.0-64607.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools-distrib
./vmware-install.pl 'Just press enter on all selections'
reboot

The config tool running with vmware-install.pl will compile the modules for fedora.
P.s. you have to do this from the Console/Client.

Good luck.

Excellent! Worked great, except for HGFS.
