unsupported number of MTRRS 7

Hi,

I'm running ESX 3.5.0 on a Proliant ML310 G5 in a test environment. When server boots I get this message on the console:

TSC: 63210 cpu0:0) Cpu:1350 Unsupported number of MTRRS 7

Anybody knows what does it means?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer, but I'm getting the same, running a pair of Intel 5320's on a Tyan workstation board.

Which CPUs does your HP have? Wondering if it's a microcode issue or something.

It's a Dual Core XEON 3065 at 2.33GHz

I don't know what the error message is exactly pointing to, but your device isn't on the HCL for 3.5

Yes, but works perfect on my test lab. The only problem is this console message and my curiosity ...

BTW, the server is not a ML310 G5, it's a ML110 G5.

MTRR = Memory Type Range Registers It's how your system memory is mapped to your CPU. Mine below has 6, yours apparently has 7. Check yours, and see what it says. How much memory do you have?

cat /proc/mtrr =

reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1

reg01: base=0x100000000 (4096MB), size=4096MB: write-back, count=1

reg02: base=0x200000000 (8192MB), size=8192MB: write-back, count=1

reg03: base=0x400000000 (16384MB), size=16384MB: write-back, count=1

reg04: base=0x800000000 (32768MB), size=32768MB: write-back, count=1

reg05: base=0x1000000000 (65536MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1

Memory is 4 GB

This is my cat /proc/mtrr

reg00: base=0xe8000000 (3712MB), size= 128MB: uncachable, count=1

reg01: base=0xf0000000 (3840MB), size= 256MB: uncachable, count=1

reg02: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=4096MB: write-back, count=1

reg03: base=0x100000000 (4096MB), size= 256MB: write-back, count=1

How can interpret these information?

The unsupported message showed on my console is generated by vmware or by the kernel?

What can be the impact of this message on my system?

Thanks!

What the output is saying, is your register (reg00), which can see up to 3712 MB of memory, sees 128MB, which in uncachable, and so on.

What this shows is that you have 4736 MB of memory. Have you made sure all of your memory is the same? The output looks strange, as the bits are not in oder as was my output. Not exactly sure if it will make a difference or not, but if the memory is not all the same type, then you wil be using the lowest common denominator, and you may not be using your memory at its full potential

Other than that, doesn't look like it's causing any issue, but the memory may not work to its full speed.

Message looks like it's coming from the kernel, I believe, but can't say for sure. Your CPU appears to be complaining about the memory, I think.
