2008, with or without hyper-v? posted: Mar 16, 2008 7:32 PM

Hi folks,

Should we be installing 2008 64bit in ESX/Virtual Center with, or wihout hyper-v? I've got both, but my knee jerk reaction suggests it might be an issue to install a MS OS with a hypervisor already in it.

Does anyone have any experience with this yet?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I've installed this with the Hyper-V component and there's no issue.

The issue would most likely arrise if you actually started using the virtualisation capabilities of Windows 2008.

In terms of issues, I'm guessing it would be only be performance anyway.

Hyper-V is Microsofts attempt at a layer 0 hypervisor. you would only install the component in a Win2008 Core server if you were intending to utilise that Microsoft Server as a Virtualisation Host. you would not put it on a Server Core just because it is there as that would place an unnecessary load on the box.

Also Win2K8 is not dependant on Hyper-V in any way, this will probablely change with Win2K10 or whatever (see history lesson on Terminal Services. introduced as a special edition with NT4.0 and rolled into core OS under Win2K)
