Please provide more specifics, i.e. what the .vmdk files are stored on (NAS, Windows File Share, VMFS) and platform (Workstation, Server, ESX Server).

I'm getting the same error.

It happens when moving a 102gig vmdk from the SAN to the local storage on my HP DL580, using cold migration, only moving the one disk (selected using advanced options when migrating).

Is there a log file somewhere that might provide more information about the error that occurred?

Are you using VirtualCenter to relocate your VM or Converter?

I ran into the exact same problem. I've created (imaged) a new VM using Microsoft's Automated Deployment Services. The resultant VM is fully functional with three drives (unique VMDK's) and VMware Tools is installed. I shut the machine down, converted it to a template, and was unable to deploy VM's from the template for the reason stated above. I then converted back to a VM, powered it up to verify the disk, and subsequently shut it down again. I got the same error on "Clone."

Seeing the last comment on this post, I'm trying my luck with VMware Converter (Enterprise). I'm up to 6% on this which is better than what Virtual Center was doing for me. Converter is not a very good option for me in this case. The process of cloning for the purpose of deploying like systems through a customization wizard is not very efficient in Converter.

It takes a viking to raze a village.

Hi,

I have the same issue.

I've tried to clone a VM to a certain LUN (I use SAN) and got the error message.

I've tried again - cloning the same VM to a different LUN and it worked.

The "problematic" LUN has ~20 VMs on it which are fully functional - so it doesn't look like the LUN is corrupted or something like that.

Anyway, I've found the following article, maybe it can help you guys - http://vmetc.com/2008/03/12/failed-to-deploy-template-the-virtual-disk-is-either-corrupted-or-not-a-...

Please keep on update with your results.

Thanks

It would be useful if you told us which format that vmdk is - simply post the small vmdk-descriptor - its a textfile

I been having the same problem on one VM.

Afte trying to migrate the powered off VM to different hosts with same result I found a solution.

Poweroff the VM

Migrate the VM to a different host (leave VMDK on the original storage)

Then migrate the VM and it's storage to a new host and a new LUN
