Yes, i think removing the host and adding it would solve the problem.

This is because your host is part of a cluster.

Click on the host, click "put in maintenance mode". VMmotion/Migrate/Power off your VM's as needed.

Once the host is in Maintenance mode, you need to disconnect (right click on host name, and select disconnect) from the cluster.

Then you can directly connect with VIC to that host. Putty to the host, edit the /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network files and change the appropriate host name. Save the files, reboot the host, verify the host name is correct.

Be sure to update your DNS/DHCP entries with the new host name on your network, and then you can remove the host from your cluster, and then right click on the cluster, add the host by it's new name, and that's it.

You should be complete after that.

I haven't tried it on a VC 2.5 database... But on a VC 2.0.1 database, you can modify the DNS_NAME column in the VPX_HOST table.

Then simply restart your VC Server.

From the "What's in the VC Database " thread, it looks to be the same.

Yeah that would work just fine.

You have to put it in maintenance mode first, because you can't change the host while it's live, but after it's in maintenance mode, you can disconnect and remove it from the cluster, then re-add as the IP address.

Then take it out of maintenance mode after it's back in the cluster. You may have to connect directly to the host to take it out of maintenance mode.

If I am not mistaken, I think there is a reason you want to use a host name and not an IP address in order for HA/DRS (requires DNS) to work properly. In one of your later posts you mention you aren't using those features, but why set something up in a way that wouldn't allow you to scale in the future?

What's up big Matt???

I personally wouldn't use the IP addresses, but rather the FQDN.

Keep in mind though, if you change the IP of your ESX host(s), the same table VPX_HOST, has a column "DEFAULT_VM_PATH" that contains the location for new VM's to be created. In mine, it shows netfs://IP_ADDR/path/, and not netfs://FQDN/path. So that would have to change as well, if you update a host's IP.

adding a host by name would make no difference. HA/DRS still would have the host name, the host that you see at the console is JUST a name, and it has no bearing on HOW the machines communicate. As long as his DNS is setup correctly it will still work.

The only thing he wants is to make it easier to identify BY IP the machines in his cluster, for him IP address is easier to identify the host. But the IP address showing in the console won't affect the overall scheme of things communicating. It's just a visible appeal. That's why there are agents on each of the ESX hosts.. they don't rely on the console to talk to each other, the console is JUST for monitoring the servers in one place, because that's why you can close your session in VC, and the operations will still work....

Yes, Maintenance mode will affect the vms on that host.

That's right, VM's can't run in maintenance mode. So the guests need to be shut down or moved.
