All:
I'm trying to install the latest downloaded version of VMWare WS - 6.0.2-59824 onto a Vista 32-bit host. This system has a Q6600 proc, 4gb of mem, and plenty of drive space. When I try to install, the installer starts, I get asked by Windows if I wish to run it, I click through (just like any other installer/executable), and then nothing else happens.
UAC is disabled on this machine. I'm running AVG Free anti-virus on this system. VMWare WS installed fine on my laptop, running the exact same version of Vista. Here's the install log:

Try running the installer again with the /c switch. This is to clean up a failed install or uninstall. And are you installing as Administrator?

Yes - I'm logged in as Admin and have tried the /c switch as well as the /a switch to try and extract the files. The installer, for some reason, fails to extract all the files. Emptied out the temp folder, have over 30gb free on the HD it's extracting to.

If there was some way I could just extract all the files from the installer .exe, I'd be able to install fine.

You can if you use 7-zip It allows you to open the installer and extract files from inside. Do a google for 7-zip. (once you install it, in explorer right click the file, select 7-zip menu, select open archive.

Tried 7-zip...it doesn't extract all the files...it extracts the instmsi and msiexec and it's necessary files, but it doesn't extract setup.exe or the cab files that it reads data from :(

Thanks for trying to help tho!

Ok... Did a little experiment... Reinstalled to see where the files are unarchived to when you run the installer and when the files are deleted...

When you dbl click the installer, it creates a directory in your temp folder... For mine it is docs and settings\Billyboy\User Settings\Temp{A.........}~setup (the dots mean too much stuff to type, you get the idea)...

As soon as the installer is run, it unzips to this directory. You can copy the files out BEFORE the installer stops. It deletes the dir when it exits. Just use the MSI file to install.

Hmmm... Very strange indeed!!!!!!
Have you looked in the admin tools (event viewer) in Vista to see what the
app error might be? Found elusive things there before that pointed to a bad
MS installer....
