vmware server add newly converted OS; Error: "more features than this version"

Hi,

A newby question. Started with VMware (11/23/7) downlaoded the converted and server. Converted a W2003 server (took a long time) succesfully. Selected the NON-ESX server option (the 2nd). Selected WS 5.x VM Server, VM Player. After the conversion wanted to add the newly created VM to VM server (using the add function). But this doesn't work: Configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version.

In the VMX the config.version = 8 the virualHW.version = 6

What is wrong? How to run a converted OS under a server? Did i select the wrong options, am i missing something (an option)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Gerard

The questions is what version of vm-server are you trying to run this VM in? You may have chosen to convert your physical machine to a version newer then the version you require.

Try copying over the vmdk file to the VMware Server host.

Then create a new virtual machine and add this disk to it.

Ignore any warnings and continue on.

Make sure you use a COPY of the vmdk, in case something bad happens.

Good Luck!

Guess that's not the way to do it: now when starting the VM it complains again: "One or more of the disks used by this virual machine was created by an unsupported version..." There no way to start the VM.

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance,

Gerard

There is an option to select WS 5.x, VMWare server 1.x & Player 1.x. Selecting this option everything works fine.

I'm having the exact same issue. I used Vmware-converter 3.0.2 converter to convert my xp partition(i dual-boot). I saved the machine to my large usb drive. I'm using VMware Server 1.0.4. When i try to start the machine i get...

Unable to add virtual machine "/media/disk/Section-2/Section-2.vmx" to the inventory: Configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version..

I don't have room to move 30 gigs of OS back to my physical drive and since that option doesn't seem to work even if I did, does anyone else have a solution? Thanks in advance.

Where did you find this option?

There is an option in the (latest?) convertor to select WS 5.x, VMware server 1.x & Player 1.x. Did you select this option (it is not the default).
