I found the 2.5 client in the linux package (VMware-server-e.x.p-63231.i386.tar.gz).

Relative path is: \vmware-server-distrib\lib\hostd\docroot\client\

Takes more resources than the old server v1 console, but at least you can shut down the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access (tomcat) service permanently. Not sure if there is any loss of functionality, though.

Is this Server 2.0 on Windows? I'm just asking because of the direction of the slashes, plus the fact on my system under /usr/lib/vmware/hostd/docroot/client I don't have that file, just the Windows client installation file.

Can you which platform you are running 2.0 on?

I'm running Windows XP SP2. But I downloaded the linux
package to poke through it a little after seeing another post regarding
how you could download it directly from the host via the web ui. When that
didn't work for me, I started digging through the linux package to see
if it was bundled with the tomcat stuff. Sure enough, it is. Haven't actually tested a linux install yet to test, though.

Just download and
extract the linux package and extract with your archiver of choice. Drill down to that client folder and the windows client is there.

I sincerely hope that the Web UI (which was optional in early versions) is not gonna be the main UI for that great solution. It looks ugly, doesn't do what we (Linux users) need to do. Do you really believe I'm gonna downgrade my Firefox version to be able to use your crappy .xpi applet ? At least, let us use the old UI with the new version !!!! Else I'm sorry to say so, I'm a BIG fan of VMware since the workstation v1.0 , I'm gonna have to seek for another virtualisation platform which is gonna be a hell of a process ... The fact is VMware has always been the most advanced virtualization platform, and have always develop with "Linux users" in mind since Vi3. What happenned ? First you discard the VMware ESX Server Linux Console, then you cripple the VMware Server 2.0 console so only Windows users can use it ? Is all that because the VMware Server product is now free ?? You wanna sell more VMware Workstation or what ? Are you gonna develop a new ESX Server based on WIndows Longhorn ? (I'M KIDDING !!!!! DON'T DO THAT !!!)

I'd like my critics to be more constructive, I know it's a beta release, but please guy, don't keep it that way ... Let us use the great Linux native Console you developped in the early version of VMware Server.

What exactly are you talking about here? The XPI should work in the latest version of
Firefox available for Windows (32-bit) and Linux (32-bit and 64-bit). If it doesn't, I'd like
to know about it.

I'd like to add my 2 cents in here as well.

A native console application when running VMware Server on Linux is a MUST. I run my Windows instance at work in a VM running on Server on a Linux host. Using a web-based UI is not very friendly as a lot of the screen real estate for the UI is used up by the browser controls and frames.

Not a very good choice in my opinion.

I'd like to offer two possibilities to get your feedback. The first is that you mentioned that it is a Windows guest. You should see the best performance using a more native remote windowing protocol like RDP. Is there any reason that the Linux 'rdesktop' does not suit your use case? The second possibility is that you can use the fullscreen icon in the power bar to get your full Windows guest resolution on your client machine. In the future there might be a way to do consoles in tear-off windows as well, would such a feature interest you? Thanks for your input.

You raise a very good point, that once a machine is installed it's rare that the console is used (at least for me). Being able to have the web console "tear away" into another, lighter weight window is a possibility. Would it also be possible to generate a URL that spawned this "tear away" window? I tend to run a few consoles side by side when I need to and it would be nice to do this without the bulk of the full web interface.

Exists in the ~~awfull painfully slow~~ webui but easier to use

console works. Joy.
Better: tear-away console. Double-plus-good.
switch overview
start and stop order (I like that view, much easier)
event view, same fashion as ESX
create and remove VM
browse datastore, add VM (like on ESX / VC)

Added functions:

You can look at performance data!
- Day, PastDay
- CPU, Disk, Memory, Network, System
easy to see and change MAC address
change VM disk size (not tested)
force entry into boot configuration screen
processor affinity
VM annotations (you can use notes)
Virtualized MMU (didn't tested this)
Can define new administrators, no need to be root
Templates
Importing Virtual Appliances (didn't worked with "Nostalgia").
Reports (just played with, seems to be like on ESX)

Missing

Upgrade virtual hardware. Couldn't do this (or didn't found)

Now I can shut this tomcat thing down and never use the web console anymore. This is quite welcomed.

How do I run the thick VI client?

I'm running 2beta on windows XP and the vmware.exe is giving me the following error:

There was a problem connecting:

501 Global command GLOBAL server-vmdb to non-host agent targets not supported

I need to use the console/client and turn off the tomcat server.

The VI 2.5 client (for Windows) is only available from the Linux version of Server 2.0. So you can download it from a running version or download the Linux software, extract it, and grab the client from there. I don't have Server running on Windows so I don't know if that client even works with Server running on Windows, but I read a post from someone in here that it doesn't work. Supposedly the client only connects to Server 2.0 running on Linux.

_{^Sorry about the last post, I was kind of frustrated about all this ... I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.9 on openSuSE 10.3 and it keeps tells me that I gotta install the XPI. I install it, then it tells me I'm not able to see my VM. Anyway, that's not the point here, what I'm trying to say guys is that the web browser solution should be optional, not "imposed" ... For people like me, the standard UI is way much better. When run locally, it's fast and functional, which the XPI is not.^}

_{^Thanks to you guys for taking the time to read all this, I know some post sounds "aggressive", but that's the way I feel about it right now ...^}
