Based on community feedback, we are proposing improvements to the Communities Homepage and individual community homepages to improve readability / navigation and to reduce clutter.

See details at VMware Communities Proposed Homepage Design and give us your feedback here in this thread.

Yes I prefer the proposal over the existing layout. The only request I would have is that on lists of threads that the last post is referred to by posting timestamp instead of the X minutes ago concept. It may be a cool feature of the new jive s/w but in my opinion it just destroys information.

Iain

I like the proposed design!

Further improvements would be
{noformat}-{noformat} to resize the "header" (the area with the background-hero-community.gif background)
{noformat}-{noformat} to use a slightly darker font color
{noformat}-{noformat} increase the font size of the postings

I also agree with Iain's regarding the time stamps..

Tom, for me unread / changed show in bold and those Ive read in normal, and anything thats not new but updated has (updated) after it, does this not show for you?

one thing Im struggling with is viewing the desktop level and its swamped by fusion stuff, and Im not a mac person, it would be nice if I could choose for those not to show at that level.

Liz,

that is what shows for me as well on the forum home site, however what I am talking about is once I am in the threaded view, there in no longer any easy visual ident to show new postings, true I could click the last post Hyperlink, but that is only the last post,

Kind Regards

Tom,

For me, bolded titles only applies at the discussion level, once you get into a thread you can't tell which messages are new (but you used to). This seriously hampers the threaded view.

My suggestions (ranking not important, I just find the normal list hard to read):
  1. (If you haven't already considered/implemented this) cache the rankings and tag clouds and delay updating to periodic intervals to lessen load - I don't see these as particularly useful and they're unlikely to change rapidly. Once all performance issues are solidly resolved you could re-enable them.
  2. Move the Search and Advanced links in the header up to the same line as ID/log out/print to save some space. Alternately, move the giant image up, or use some of that white space in it for the search box to help link the search and the particular community in the user's mind. I'm not sure if the last suggestion would look too dense.
  3. Actually, aren't login/register/print/search actions, so shouldn't they be in the action box? This would also free up some space.
  4. What is "Advanced" - advanced search?
  5. Not strictly VMTN related, but there are two search boxes in the upper right. What does the top one do, search all of vmware.com? I could see someone searching the wrong box by mistake.
  6. Reword "Receive email notifications" to indicate that it's for this (thread|message|blog|etc), possibly shorten (e.g. "Watch this _____") with a tooltip explaining you'll get email notifications.
  7. On a subforum view (e.g. the last image), I dislike the background image behind the active thread (in this case, "VMware Workstation") - the side gradients clash with the hard top/bottom edges. I thnk a simple box background or a side hilight (like a ball or a bar) would work better.
  8. Put the right sidebar resources into a tab to avoid scattering information sources?
  9. I dislike the VMware ad on the right side - I'm not convinced it belongs at all, but if you decide to have it anyway, perhaps make it fit in better and make it more obviously a "Learn more about our nifty features!", e.g. link of the day. Possibly let registered users disable.

I agree with the things other people have said.

Offtopic: You could disable comments on the proposal document to make it more likely people will post here.

I have only two requirements:

  • Please choose a different background color, something like a light blue or some other matching color. The current white one is too eye blinding and takes the focus away from the message body.

  • And an improvement on the search feature. Specifically when trying to find all of a person's posts (created by him, or when he contributed to a post), I never seem to find them, I see only one or two, even though all dates is selected and the user has posted many times. The previous forum didn't have this issue.

And the other requirement, that seems to have been taken care of, was moving every info not related to the posts on the right column.

Thanks for the new added features.

Not sure about the search results (are you searching all forums?), but a workaround would be to look at the person's discussions page. For example, your is http://communities.vmware.com/people/kontiki?view=discussions

Or, if that person posted a lot, use this search options. It works well.

{font:Times New Roman}Yes, it's working fine now. {font}

{font:Times New Roman}Needless to say, but swear that I've checked all forums, specific ones, I've clicked discussions...and didn't seem to work.{font}

{font:Times New Roman}Don't know what I've missed,...:|{font}

{font:Times New Roman}Anyway, thanks for the clarification.{font}

Thanks Peter_vm, yes it's working better now.

Not sure why the font issue popped up.

Looks goods a couple suggestions though...

Can you make the "VMware Communities" section with the graphic of the boxes smaller, it takes up alot of real estate.

Get rid of the popular tags section, I really don't think anyone really uses this or cares to see popular tags.

Move Top Members up above the Technical Resource and Blogs sections, people work hard for points in these forums and having this down in the basement doesn't give them any recognition.

Add back the legend for the Status Levels somewhere

And, just how does one get to the general "people" page. I don't see any links anywhere!

In every "top users" box is a link at the top, either named "Browse all" or "View all"
