Hi there,

I am trying to install the VM6 onto my WinXP-SP2 machine. When I click on the VMware-workstation-6.0.0-45731.exe, it prompt out the installation GUI, but, it will close down immediately(just flash a second).

I try to install other VM products, such as VM5 or VM Player, and it do have the same symptom.

I only got the vminst.log for VM6 installation:

Probably not the root cause but you may want to check the windows installer service is either started or set in startup mode manual...

are you able to install other MSI fine ?
is the P: drive local to your computer or a mapped drive ?

could you post the output of "SET" executed in a command line box ?
this will list your active env. variables

could you completely clean your temp folder(s)
so c:\windows\temp, c:\document and settings\your username\Local Settings\Temp

(if your windows is not on C: adapt the drive letters accordingly)

Already started Windows Installer Service, and remove all files and folder on C:\WINDOWS\Temp and C:\Documents and Settings\myuser\LocalSettings\Temp.

Rebooted, etc. but no ways to install vmware.

My config:

.NET Framework v3

CPU Athlon 64 X2 64

2 Gb RAM

Thanks a lot for anyone solving our problem!

For information, I managed to instal VMware on Windows XP-SP2 , doing the following steps :

1.) restart Windows on Safe Mode , press F8 on boot

2.) log with an user that have Admin rights

3.) Launch the VMplayer installer

4.) It will uncompress ALL files on your folder C:\Documen~1\YourUser\Local Settings\Temp{A98B4-B56D2.......}

5.) At the end of the installation you will receive a error like "You can not install applications on Safe Mode"

6.) DON'T CLICK OK, leave this error message open!

7.) While the message is open, go to the folder created on step 4 ( C:\Documen~1\YourUser\Local Settings\Temp{A98B4-B56D2.......} ) , copy ALL files and paste on another folder, like C:\Install

8.) Click OK on the error message, this will automatically empty the folder C:\Documen~1\YourUser\Local Settings\Temp{A98B4-B56D2.......}

9.) Restart Windows on normal mode

10.) Go to the folder where you copy ALL the uncompressed files ( C:\Install , on this case)

11.) Launch "Vmware Player.msi"

12.) You have now VMplayer installed on your Windows box!

See details on this post: Re: Unable to install VMware Player - Windows XP Home SP2 (French)

is your machine in workgroup or part of a windows domain ?
in the domain case, your could have an active GPO restricting what can be run or not
as the GPO use file names (or part of it) and does not check the actual exe content, simply renaming the file does the trick

any further news on the problem??

I have the same problem.

I used your method to install and make the vmware workstation running, but all new virtual machines can't be started with an error message "failed to launch peer process". I suspect it has problems when the underlying program called some files with name started with "vm", do you have this problem??

I have around for this problem but looks like it rarely happens elsewhere.

Please help!

Hey guys I found out the cause of that.

After I manually kill the process "FixCamera.exe" everything runs fine. (my web cam still works fine after that, anyone know what's it for??)

I can run files started with "vm" and starts new virtual machine smoothly.

I know sounds strange but that's my experience.

If you google fixcamera.exe theres a lot of talk about it breaking a lot of things. Killing it off seems a good idea. (perhaps rename it so it cant auto start)

Hey ktslwy! you're great!

I'm looking for a fix to this issue since october and I've tried many suggestions from other people, but only yours "killing FixCamera.exe process" definitively solved my problem!

Thanks a lot!
