First off, ICMP packets (or PINGs) will leak your real IP address.
This is why we filter out all traffic except TCP and DNS (UDP port 53).
So if you try to ping any external site or IP (like www.google.com), it will fail.
Also, Tor will slow down your connection, sometimes when it gets really busy, your connection to websites will time out. This is the price of only a few thousand people supporting a few hundred thousand people you use Tor.
After you connect the VPN (from Windows) to JanusVM, try going to http://www.janusvm.com or http://janusvm.peertech.org (same site) and check the Tor status of you connection on the left side of the page.
Pieces of information that would be helpful:
\- What OS are you running this under
\- What VM product are you using (Player, Workstation, Server)
\- Total amount of RAM on the HOST environment (not the VM)
\- The internal and external (LAN) IP addresses reported on the screen of the VM.
\- The status on the left side of the page at http://www.janusvm.com before (optional) and after you connect to JanusVM.
Hope that helps.

Hi all!
I'm having trouble getting JanusVM to work on my
WinXP Home laptop. Once installed (viewed online
instructions), I can ping all VM's Virtual IP
addresses (192.168.229.1/192.230.1), IP addresses on
local network (172.16.0.1/254), and IP addresses of
VPN (10.10.10.1/10). But I cannot ping outside, ie
google, etc. Nor can I actually pull up a website.
What am I doing wrong here. Thanks
Tony
Hi Mike,
I have gotten both Linux VM's and Windows VM's to work with JanusVM.
A little bit more information is needed in order for me to understand why you're having this problem.
\- What is the internal (VMware NAT'd) and external (LAN or VMware Bridged) IP address of your JanusVM.
\- What is the IP address of the other VM you want to connect to JanusVM.
\- What is the IP of your HOST OS (not any of the VMs).
\- What type of firewall are you running on your other VM.
The Internal (VMware NAT'd) interface provides a means of connecting to JanusVM through a internal IP network that is not accessible to other on your LAN, only VM's on your PC.
The External (VMware Bridged) interface provides a means of allowing others on your LAN to be able to use JanusVM. BTW, you need to create new user accounts for each user on your LAN that wishes to use JanusVM.
If you are running this for personal use (ie, not sharing it with others), then I would recommend using the Internal interface IP address when connecting the VPN.
So, in Windows XP, either you launch the Run.bat script located at
New Connection Wizard).
Fill in the information accordingly after you've selected to create a new VPN connection in the wizard.
After you get connected to JanusVM, you can visit http://www.janusvm.com to see if you are being routed through Tor or not.
Hope that helps.
Kyle
Has anyone connected to JanusVM with another running
VM? I can get to the internet via a windowsXP VM and
was trying to connect it to JanusVM running in
workstation 6. I have vista64 as the host machine.
I'm getting the "
192.168.0.79....." not foundissue.
Thanks
Mike
Hi Everyone
I have a new technical question. First I must admit I don't see the whole flash instruction file, my virtual memory runs out at 2 GB. However it all runs well until its time to connect with the VPN, after a couple of things happendes, fixing DNS leaking etc there is a count down of 10 sec. on last window. When the countsdown is done my VPN connection status changes to:
The remote computer did not respond. for further assistance, click More... ( Error 678) etc..
The Janus VM seems to be running, atleast I can ping google...
I also tried to create new accounts "guest1" etc. didn't help...
Im on a windows pro machine, any suggestions on where I should look to fix this problem?
Thank you for any help or suggestions!
EDIT: I found the problem, I was blocking "NT Kernel & System" in my firewall. Now it all works great!

Dhcp in JanusVM is just torture. I've got a WinXP Pro laptop with it on that I've used on 2 different networks. Bad idea. It gives eth0 a class A address and eth1 a class C address. Sometimes one or the other doesn't get any kind of meaningful address. Or it gets address(es) that are already assigned by dhcp causing immediate conflicts on the network. Every time I boot it on the class C network it assigns eth0 a class A address 10.0.0.x and eth1 a class C address 192.168.0.x in spite of the fact that I have given up trying to get it to work on that (class A) network because of the ip conflicts. Where, in the name of God, is it remembering this setting? And why? ifconfig eth1 down, killall -9 etc etc. worked once but not again. The ip errors seem to accumulate. Even when the ip addresses are seemingly logically assigned and free I get "network path not found errors" which leaves me scratching my head as to what to do next. Manually assigning the ip address and netmask is useless. I've taken to using Vidalia-Tor most of the time though this limits me. I firmly believe in the concept of JanusVM but I really don't have the time to wrestle with it to this extent. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but part of the conceptual appeal of JanusVM is of a product that is simple to use, encrypting all TCP traffic without having to manually configure separate applications.
Tanks Kel for that nice JanusVM appliance , I like it but I cant go to internet with .Please help me.. and sorry for my bad English
I have : Xp pro , ADSL , router ;Vmware player : VMnet8 (Nat) activate .I use JanusVM live with iso . I dont use JanusVM.vmdk because JnusVM say that bridged mode is not running (else with VMnet0 activated). Maybe I don't now to do Bridged connection ! I have only a PC.
Vmware player and JanusVM is installed with XP Vpn without problem . Only sometimes a message cmd : CMExpeption package : That folder is invalid. Please make sure the folder existes and is writable
I have the 2 JanusVM ip ( for local and Lan ) gateway VMnet8 :192.168.120.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 DNS : 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.4 .
I have a windows with JanusVM VPN start , that give me the Octets received and the octets send . But send are big bigger than received (500 / 10 000 000) ??? Tor work all the time I think.
When I run JanusVM VPN connection ( logging JanusVM guest is ok) I cant have internet : web pages says server not fund
In my look nstop firewall I can see : Authorise UDP Exe generic Host Process for Win32Service Port 53; IP: 4.2.2.4 or when I connect Firefox : " Authorise UDP Exe Firefox Port 53; IP: 4.2.2.4 or Port 53; IP: 4.2.2.2 " but I cant get internet ( no servers)
Sometimes I have a strange search localdomain nameserver 208.67.222.222 ( opendns ) that auto replaces 4.2.2.4 in JanusVM DNS configuration and some times in my IP DNS XP pro Connexion.
I can see without Vpn started :
UDP resolver1.opendns.com=208.67.222.222 Ports dest 2087 Scr domain =53
If I do a ping in my cmd XP pro with JanusVM VPN started I cant get no more Google.com.
With others appliances Vmware works fine.
I tried with Qemu without results:
http://hackszine.com/blog/archive/2007/06/surf_privately_and_anonymously.html
qemu -L . -m 80 -net nic -redir tcp:8118::8118 -boot c -hda JanusVM.img
I tried Virtualbox but also no internet after connect icon JanusVM VPN
Because is made under Windows 2003 environment and mine is under Xp pro ?
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2007/07/06/how-to-surf-anonymously-with-janusvm/
Vidalia-tor works fine with my firefox
What is wrong ? What to do ?
This appliance is known as the most popular , but I dont see in the net and Google goods docs and discussion for it.
Domage je pense que ça merite beaucoup plus dinterêt de la part de tous .
Merci

More precisions...
I re-installed Vmware Player and tried again to get JannusVM internet connection.
I have 3 networks connections :
1. My Xp pro local area connection (adls with roteur)
Here the VMware Bridge Protocol is active. And in Internet Protocol TCP/IP I writhed the 2 DNS Servers given by my provider
With the WNTIPCFG.EXE I know associate to the Ethernet Adapter (Intel ) my private IP , My adapter address , subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 , Default Gateway :192.168.2.1 and DHCP Server 192.168.2.1
2. VMnet8 connected with VMbrige Protocol inactive . And in TCP/IP Protocol Vmware installation have writhed in Use the following IP address : IP address: 192.168.133.1 and Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
I look in Vitrtual Network Editor ( VMware Player , vmnetcfg.exe )
NAT Menu : VMnet host : VMnet8 ; Gateway IP address : 192.168.133.2 Netmask : 255.255.255.0 . Service Started .
DHCP Menu Started : VMnet1 and VMnet8 Subnet : 192.168.133.0 Netmask : 255.255.255.0
3. VMnet1 not connected
I run JanusVM.vmdk and I have without trouble and no alert messages
Ethernet1 : Bridged
Ethernet2 : Nat
For Local PC
192.168.133.131\Setup\Run.bat and for Lan

In Start / Run I enter : PC

I get JanusVM Icon and a new connection JanusVM VPN (Mini port réseau étendu (PPTP)
I start this JanusVMVPN connection and I enter the guest /password .
Cmd /Tor DNS work . No error , connection is ok.
In firewall everything is allowed .
I see Tor working and going outside (in my firwall)
Now I open Firefox : I enter Janus.com after a moment Server cant be found . Firewall let-me see that : UDP Firefox Port 53 IP 4.2.2.4 or IP 4.2.2.2 and nothing else
(with IE and with JanusVm live (iso) the is the something)
It seams when I start a link in my navigator that all traffic is locked or no DNS resolution ??? when JanusVM VPN is runing.
In active Network Processes :

WITHOUT JanusVM VPN connection runing I have :
In Firefox with the link http://www.janusvm.com/ :

WITH JanusVM VPN connection runing I have :
In Firefox with the link http://www.janusvm.com/ :

or

Later I found in My Xp local area connection that DNS servers have changed :to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220 220 (opendns) .
Who does that ?
VMplayer ? JanusVM ? Tor ? Privoxy ? a Trojan ? ( very dangerous thing)
Some times in place of JanusVM DNS, nameservers 4.2.2.2 , change to 208.67.222.222 (opendns) .
très bizarre !!!! à suivre pour la securité et anonimat.
Merci for your help, ideas and experience .
Jedartx.
I have a Mac Pro and a Fusion with WindowsXP and a JanusVM running on it. I found JanusVM working nice with easy install using Windows and thought I use JanusVM with OS X too.
I connect with JanusVM with Internet Connection VPN(PPTP) and it says, that there is a connection via VPN to the internet. Nothing works - not intern, not extern!
Has anybody a working system OS X 10.4 with JanusVM?
I'm not too familiar with advanced security technical concepts.
I have just one concern and that is ANONYMITY
I have been very very satisfied with web-based proxy (proxify.com)
So my question is:
and protect me from the various "tricks" a site may use to get my REAL IP ?
And whose IP is actually visible to the other site ?
thanks
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this or not, so I'll apologize in advance if it isn't. I'm running JanusVm in VmWare player, the host machine is Windows Xp Home SP2. Everything installs/runs just fine and the DNS leak fixer seems to work. When I go to the Janus homepage it tells me that I'm using a known Tor node, yet I get "server not found" from Firefox whenever I try to access any Tor hidden services. Any help or advice that could be thrown my way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
