I have a vm (Suse 9.1) running under workstation 6 and i was wondering how i can resize this file as the majority of the disk space allocated is not being used
thanks

What type of VMDK have you used? Pre-allocated, create on write, 2GB sparse?
vmware-vdiskmanager(.exe) is the tool you want (in the Workstation install directory), but the method varies dependant on disk type.
-k shrinks non pre-allocated disks.
-X resizes vmdks.
etc.
Some more example here: http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/ws_disk_manager_examples.html
Run vmware-vdiskmanager with no switches for a list of options.

Use vmware-vdiskmanager to expand the virtual disk and use a third party utility to expand the guest OS partition.
If you want to make the Max size of the virtual disk smaller, you will need to use some type of disk imaging software like ghost and restore the image into a smaller virtual disk
