I am running Fusion 1.0 on a MacBook Pro 17". When I select the Screen Resolution of 1024 x 768, my screen shrinks in size and become smaller and I have blackness around the active screen. What I would like is for the screen not to shrink and become smaller but to more or less retain its size and get magnified, as happens when I am using Bootcamp to run Windows XP. I am also able to obtain this effect even in Parallels but have been unable to do so in Fusion. I am not sure what it is that I need to do to get this effect. Any suggestions and recommendations would be welcome.

you achieve this by running in 'full screen' mode

If you add/change ~/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/preferences to include the line
pref.autoFitFullScreen = "fitHostToGuest"
(and remove any previous pref.autoFitFullScreen line), when you work in fullscreen this will do what you want. I don't think there's a way to do this in single window mode.

I'm having something of a similar issue, and I tried this fix, but it didn't seem to work. Specifically, it happens with Starcraft. Starcraft is locked at 640x480, and typically, it will be magnified and stretched to fit the full screen, when run in Windows normally, or in Boot Camp. In Fusion, however, it runs at 640x480 in a small box. Before I changed that line, when I tried to get a bigger window or full screen it, it would have the black area around it. After I added that line, full screen would instead revert me to a weird state, where there was a black box in the top left corner (I assume that's starcraft) with the rest of my normal desktop across the rest of the screen. Is there any fix for this?

Try going fullscreen before starting StarCraft - it should work, I've done it (though admittedly not recently).

I just tried adding pref.autoFitfullScreen = "fitHostToGuest" in Fusion 2.0 beta 1 and it didnt seem to have any effect. Is there a new way to do this for 2.0? Starcraft in a tiny window is no fun :)

Thanks.

Fit full screen doesn't currently work in 2.0b1.
