When loading this enviornment into vm I am asked to login, but I was never able to actually setup a username/password. In the desc on the site it does not load a username/password.

Once the application has started you can login to the administrative interface.

Log in:

user root

password zimbra

ifconfig eth0 to get the IP address

From your desktop on the host machine:

open a browser

enter https:///

user zimbra

password zimbra

I would like to get the Zimbra VM via torrent, usually faster for a >1.5GB file.

I cannot locate a signature file, ie MD5 hash, for the file. Does anyone have a trusted source for this information?

Hi,

the password zimbra is not a very good choice. Because there are other keyboard maps out there. E.g. some Europeans have a qwertz keyboard.

They should try yimbra as password instead Smiley Wink

We have not put our latest virtual appliance on Bit Torrent but it is clearly available on our website. The new file is 300 MB so it should be easier to download.

I downloaded and installed the latest 4.5.0_BETA1_437.RPL1 appliance. In the inital configuration it got to the page about setting up the host. I changed the dynamic address to a static one on my subnet. I also added the address and host to my DNS server. I also added the default gateway. After the VM rebooted, it still had the dynamic address. I figured it was a bug so I changed it in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and rebooted. The static was then found and everything appeared to be ok.

I then updated the software. After downloading a pile of RPMs, during the installation of said RPMs, it failed due to using the wrong command line parameters for at least one of the rpath commands. This pretty much bricked it. Nothing further could be done with the appliance as it then repeatedly failed when it came back up. Zimbra would not start. When I brought up the web UI, it asked me for configuration. Clicking OK reported something like 'No write access to log file'. I clicked Done and I receive piles of errors in a log file in /tmp. Of interest is this:

Adding xxxxxx.xxxxxxx.com to zimbraMailHostPool in default COS...

usage modifyCos(mc) (name|Id) [attr1 value1 \[attr2] value2...]]

Followed by a usage message. I x'ed out my hostname there. This is followed by an exceptionally large number of error messages, presumably because this one command failed.

Figured you might want to see this. I'm actually interested in Zimbra for our current enterprise. Our key goal is to minimize OS level administration and seamless and tested automatic updates are really important to us. yum and apt, for example, are key players for us because the greatly reduce the overall administration required on the boxes.

Anyway, I'm going to revert it back to the baseline VM and test it from there.

I hate replying to myself on most fora, but I wanted to give a small update. The IP address problem was solved after going back to the original VM. On the first go around, I didn't notice the ajax "Are you sure you want to do this" message that appears at the top of the page the first time around when changing host settings. That got me through where I needed to be. I'm planning on snapshotting the build after the install is complete in order to test the upgrade again. I have this sneaking suspicion that the original upgrade failed because it didn't know what address was assigned to the machine.

How exactly did you try to update? You shouldn't be able to install rpms on this appliance. I would suggest using the rPath Appliance Agent interface @ https://:8003 to update it.

Also about your feedback on the rAA network configuration plugin, would you prefer to see a real dialog type pop up?

I'd like to set up the appliance to run on our internal network for testing purposes... we don't want it to route externally at this point. Also, I don't want to do anything that might interfere with our existing mail server.

Can anyone spell out the steps for me to do that? We have a Win2003 server... I know a bit about dns, but have no clue about setting up MX records etc.

Thanks

I downloaded the appliance from Zimbra's web site. No problem booting up in VMWare Server. After booting, it receives an IP Address from my DHCP server and a message to go to: https://"ip address":8003

Fine. I go to that address and logon with the default logon, which takes you through the rPath Appliance configuration. You can change passwords, set a static IP, DNS, and hostname. You can also set the time zone, change the root password, a mail relay, etc. Once I finished with the rPath portion of the configuration, it attempts to to start the Zimbra services. That's as far as I've gotten. All I get is "Cannot determine services - exiting" You're supposed to be able to admin Zimbra at https://"ip address":7071/zimbraAdmin, but the page fails because the Zimbra services don't start.

I have looked through the forums on the Zimbra site, but haven't found a specific answer to why the services don't start. I was hoping play around with Zimbra and evaluate a possible move from Exchange. I guess I'll have to go the full install route. Not something I will be doing anytime soon.

Hi guys-

This is John H. from Zimbra.

Sorry you're having trouble, and we'd like to help!

I'd like to invite you over to our Forums which are monitored extensively by moderators and employees. I'm jholder in the forums, by the way.

http://www.zimbra.com/forums

If you get a cannot determine services, then that means LDAP isn't starting for any number of reasons. My guess is an error=99, cannot bind. . .which would indicate a hostsfile/dns problem.

You can try:

\[zimbra@johnholder ~]$ zmlocalconfig -e ldap_master_url=ldap://localhost:389

\[zimbra@johnholder ~]$ zmlocalconfig -e ldap_url=ldap://localhost:389

\[zimbra@johnholder ~]$ zmlocalconfig -e ldap_host=localhost

and force LDAP to bind to localhost instead. Then try

\[zimbra@johnholder ~]$ ldap start

Started slapd: pid 32604

If that works, and you get a PID, then you can try to start the zimbra services:

zmcontrol start

Good luck, and please let me know if anyone on this thread needs help:

jholder@zimbra.com

Thanks!

john

Same problem here : "Cannot determine services - exiting"

I followed your advice and ran the commands:

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmlocalconfig -e ldap_master_url=ldap://localhost:389

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmlocalconfig -e ldap_url=ldap://localhost:389

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmlocalconfig -e ldap_host=localhost

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmlocalconfig/ldap start

I got:

Error: must be run as zimbra user

Started slapd: pid 4246

So I tried:

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmlocalconfig/ldap stop

su zimbra

/opt/zimbra/bin/ldap start

I got:

/bin/bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied

/bin/bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied

/bin/bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied

Started slapd: pid 4426

Either way it doesn't work - whether ldap is started as root or zimbra I still can't start the services in the rpath interface and get the same error.
