Cannot install AS-5: Error unmounting CD - endless loop

I'm using the latest beta of VMWare Workstation 6 on Windows Vista on an Intel QX6700 Extreme processor.

I've downloaded the latest build of Startcom Linux AS-5 x86_64 (a Redhat clone). After getting to the prompt for a root password, I receive an error message:

An error occurred unmounting the CD. Please make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2 and then click OK to retry. [ OK ]

Clicking OK only redraws the error message. I cannot hit Ctrl-Alt-F7 or Ctrl-Alt-Fx to bring up a tty, so I'm unable to perform any additional operation.

I've verified the DVD ISO image against the MD5 checksum. The image is mounted as an image in VMWare.

I did some searches on this error message and others have gotten the error message on certain hardware, which leads me to believe this may be a VMWare issue.

I'm going to try CentOS 5 64-bit and StartCom AS-5 32-bit and see if they exhibit the same problem (downloading these 3-4GB images takes a while). In the meantime, I appreciate any suggestions on getting past this error.

Your can't hit ctrl+alt+F7 because ctrl+alt is specific to VMware. You can change it in Edit>Preferences>Hot Keys. Choose a custom combination and then you will be abble to use ctrl+alt+whatever in your VMs

hope this will help.

You need to hold down the space bar when hitting ctrl-alt, and releaseing the space bar afterwards (but before pressing the F7 key, I think) if you need to use ctrl-alt in a key combination (like switching Linux terminals).

Thanks on the tips for Ctrl-Alt. I knew it trapped the key sequence by itself, but I thought I'd used the key sequence in the client machine when used in combination with other keys. I'll try the Spacebar or hotkey remapping techniques when I return home this evening.

Yesterday, I was able to successfully install CentOS 5 x86_64 on a VMWare machine, so the problem appears to be exhibited only in Startcom AS-5.

The problem does not occur if I use the FTP installation method.

I will attempt an install using Startcom 32-bit edition and report back.

The problem did not occur with the 32-bit build. The problem did not occur with the 64-bit build using FTP install.

At this point, I contacted the distributor for StartCom Linux. He identified the problem, fixed it, and seeded new ISOs. The latest ISO with an MD5 of 9d172d9296c816adf6bb471b27578a96 does not exhibit the problem.
