These are the errors I receive when I try to run vmware workstation. Does this look familiar?

Thanks
Cory

hi,

i don't have this "no version info available" errors, but i can't start vmware-workstation 6.0b44426 either.

/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /opt/vmware/workstation/lib/lib/libvmwareui.so.0/libvmwareui.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZN3Gtk6Widget14get_accessibleEv

system is gentoo, kernel: 2.6.21-rc4-git2, latest gtk versions installed. does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

I'm getting very similar "undefined symbol" errors as of today with the same version of workstation 6. Anybody know a solution?

Try starting VMware from the command line using the following syntax

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmware

or

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware

Does it still have the issue?

There was a type O in the original posting

Neither option makes a difference:

% VMWARE_USE_GTK_SHIPPED=force vmware
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libvmwareui.so.0/libvmwareui.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZN3Gtk13RecentManager11get_defaultEv

% VMWARE_USE_GTK_SHIPPED=yes vmware
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libvmwareui.so.0/libvmwareui.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZN3Gtk13RecentManager11get_defaultEv

PS: I reinstalled the latest workstation beta 6 but it made no difference.

Found my own solution. Kevin has a typo in his above post. The correct commands to try are:

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmware

or

VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware

Both these fix the problem for me.

I fixed the type O in both locations :-)

How to fix this "permanently"? Any ideas?

Run a Supported host OS perhaps? :-)

I run vmware by clicking on my KDE desktop icon. So I have made this fix "permanent" by adding the environment variable to the "Command" string configured on the icon.

I didn't like how KDE lost my icon selection setting every time I updated one of my vmware launching icons, so I put
'export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force" into /usr/bin/vmware. Only downside is that I'll have to repeat this on every install of a new vmware version.

Well, to expound on that a bit more (not that anyone's interested, but I identified the specific issue around gentoo on this one).

This problem started occurring for me after upgrading gtk+.. Looks like VMWare 6 takes issue with x11-libs/gtk+-2.10.12.

Dropping in the VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes prior to running vmware solves the problem by telling vmware to load its own GTK.

If you want to fix this more permanently, I'd suggest dropping an export in your bashrc file (or setenv in your *cshrc).

Cheers,
-=Aaron

already fixed in Debian lenny/sid - just for information, if someone didn't already notice it
