Re: Puppy Linux

This is a reprint of my another post.  I also posted the same instruction in puppy linux forum with screen shot of vmware-tools running in puppy linux 2.11

Prerequests:

free vmware server: to create vmware virtual machine and get the vmware tools.

puppy linux iso: I tried with both 2.11 and 1.09CE and they both work.

devx_211.sfs or usr_devx.sfs: compiling solution for puppy linux

Tons of time: I spent 3 days perfecting the install procedure.

optional: free vmware player. I like it better.

Preprocedure:

create new vmware machine, allocate about 1gig HD space IDE.

set the cd-rom to iso image of the puppy linux.

launch virtual machine, boot from iso, use Xorg rather than Xvesa.

You will encounter a blank screen, if it stalls press space bar twice and then enter key.

You'll probably end up doing this about three times and xorg installs default 640x480.

puppy linux will load and you get this nice screen with smooth mouse movement.

Quit puppy linux normally and choose 512mb option at the shutdown dialog.

Restart virtual machine, go into puppy linux and then set up your network. download devx_211.sfs or usr_devx.sfs (depends on whether you use puppy 1.xx or 2.11) to /mnt/home

Quit puppy linux normally and reboot, now you have compile tools installed in your puppy.

Download vmwaretool.tar.gz to your puppy linux. It is easier to do so in vmware server but it is possible to do in vmware player. I used my personal ftp server to download tools onto puppy linux. untar into /root.

Preprocedure 2.

cd /etc/rc.d and make directories rc0.d rc1.d rc2.d rc3.d rc4.d rc5.d rc6.d (I use mkdir in xterm)

cd /etc make directory pam.d (I use mkdir in xterm)

Procedure for installing vmware tools

(I find that I have to use the version that comes with the server. I was not successful using one from vmware workstation.) run the install script ./vmware-install.pl follow the dialog instructions. Accept the defaults be ready you might need to do some directory hunting. I find puppy 1.xx have less problems and requires less maual directory input. I use puppy linux 2.11 just because I like better than the 1.09CE. After install, it will modifiy xorg. In 2.11 the module was in /usr/XR117/lib/xorg/modules (I am doing this from memory you might need to do some directory hunting) everything installs. restart X. or better yet reboot. type vmware-toolbox & in xterm to start the tools. in 2.11 only the display driver and mouse driver works. in 1.09CE everything works except the fastnetwork. There might be a solution to these problems in future version of puppy. At least I hope anyway.

Re: Puppy Linux

Thank you very much for your instructions.

They worked perfectly.

I needed some extra instructions from http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/ws_newguest_tools_linux.html.

In other distros I have used an icon appeared on the desktop showing the VMWare Tools "CD". Using the hints on this page I found that the "CD" was mounted, but just not showing on the desktop.

I just used the "cp" command in a terminal to copy the tools to my home directory. Tarred the file from there and from this on used your instructions.

BTW: I have also running in VM Zenwalk and by using these instructions I was also able to get VMWare Tools up and running in this distro.
