holy crap! man, you're a genius! works like a charm.

just copy and paste what 4g0st1n0 said in the vmx file and voila!

originally posted by 4g0st1n0:

"I think that the problem is with the video resolution.

I put this line to my vmx file:

svga.maxWidth = "640"
svga.maxHeight = "480"

to force the vga resolution. After this the installation was ok.

After the installation of Vista I removed the lines and i have installed the vmware tools.

woahhhhhhhh,

That was awesome. How did you figure that out 4g0st1n0?

NICE JOB. This problem was eating my head too. Thanks a lot for your resolution. However, whenever I shut down vista I get the "blue screen of death" But I don't think thats connected to the resolution. Or is it?

NEways, I'm happy I could install and now begin testing vista.

thanks again.
mooths...

to resolve the problem with"blue screen of death" just open the Windows Vista (experimental).vmx and find the line <usb.present = "TRUE"> them modify the line like this <usb.present = "FALSE"> and save it. thats all .

have fun

4g0st1no - *THANK YOU* *THANK YOU* *THANK YOU*

Sometimes it's great when a fresh pair of eyes takes a look at a longstanding problem. This is a *FANTASTIC* workaround and now enables a lot more people (including myself!) to return to workstation and do proper testing.

I know that a fix is (supposedly!) in the works from MS and also VMWare, but having this workaround is just sooooo great!

Again, thank you.

Have a virtual pint on me! :-)

Cheers,
Mike

To install Vista RC1 on Workstation you must add these two lines to your VMX file:

svga.maxWidth = "640"
svga.maxHeight = "480"

A clean fix to get Vista installed, but is anyone having difficulty reseting the graphical inteferface now they've generated a 640x480 display?

I'm operating an IBM T40 series laptop, and if I add the lines suggested I can get Vista RC1 5600 installed fine. VMWare tools install successfully, but I'm unable to then modify the internal Vista graphical display screen resolution (it has only one setting 640x480).

If I remove the 640 and 480 lines from the VMX file I end up with no display on the power-up of the virtual machine.

I've tried a few virtual machine builds to make sure it wasn't something I introduced. I'll keep digging, but just wondered if there was anyone else suffering the same issue.

Cheers,

Joe.

@jkrobertson: I had the same problems and solved it this way:

- for 1024 do the same

I recognized, that switching directly to 1024 did not worked but i am not sure.
