More a point of observation than a question, but as with 5472 the latest Vista build 5536 still cannot be installed under VM Workstation.

Using a SCSI disk the Vista install gets to 100% on 'Windows is loading files...' and just sits there with no HD activity.

Using an IDE disk the Vista install gets to 100% on 'Windows is loading files...' but appears to be just constantly accessing the CD drive

For both installation I'm using a CRC passed ISO.

Maybe the next build of Vista will work

This is from the release notes for VMware Workstation 5.5.2

The following are known issues with Workstation 5.5.2, Build 29772.

* Microsoft Windows Vista Beta Build CTP 5472 Cannot Be Installed as a Guest Operating System in a Workstation 5.5.2 Virtual Machine
When you attempt to install Microsoft Windows Vista Beta Build CTP 5472 in a Workstation 5.5.2 virtual machine, the virtual machine hangs as the installation completes the phase Windows is loading files. Work is in progress on this problem.

I would assume that since Vista build 5536 is newer than 5472 it would have the same problem.

You could try installing Vista build 5536 using VMware Server and install the VMware Tools before copying it over to VMware workstation 5.5.2 to run it there.

I have not tried it since I'm pleased with WS 5.5.2 but can VMware Server be installed alongside VMware Workstation on the same computer?

That would allow the install of Vista with VMWare Server then switch over to VMware Workstation where multi-snapshot capabilities is a plus (to me anyway).

I think its a little more annoying that the people who have *paid* for VMWare workstation can't really do proper Vista testing and those who get the free Server can work fine with Vista.

My employer paid for Workstation specifically for the advanced features e.g. multiple snapshots.

Is there any chance that research into this issue could be stepped up?
Vista 5536 is based on the RC-1 build stream, so it is getting ever closer to release. You've solved the video issues for VMWare server - is it possible to backport the code?

Cheers,
Mike

As stated in the release notes for Workstation, work is in progress to resolve this issue.

You can't have both products installed on the same machine. You can create the Vista Machine in VMServer and install the tools then use that machine with VMWorkstation though.

That means you either have to use an extra machine for VMServer or go through a time consuming uninstall/install/uninstall/install dance. Once you do that you can clone the Vista machine if you need multiples.

I realise work is in progress. It's just a little annoying to see fixes working fine in a free product while the paid product is still broken :-(

Cheers,
Mike

Actually I am running both Workstation 5.5.2 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 on the same box, but not running vm's from both products simultaneously. Seems to work fine.

Just tried all the known work arounds to get Vista 5536 running, no success. Has anyone tried loading it in VPC and importing into Workstation?

We realize that it is being worked on, but that pretty much means nothing without a time estimate. We'd like to have some sort of estimate of when it might be solved. Will it be 1 week? 1 Month? 1 Year? 3 Years? Currently we're completely in the dark. I doubt anyone expects anything extremely accurate, but I think we deserve at least a rough estimate.

Thanks

You can install all kind of Vista with "The Stevie Wonder Solution" which you can find on this forum.

Build 19175 wont load windows vista (pre?) RC1 Either so thats a bug.. during the beginning of installation you get the same message "windows is loading files" and just and the light "blips" on and off.. even during an upgrade after files are loaded during 1st boot, it wont load... both builds ( 29722 and 19175) are having this problem...

I was able to get the previous version of Vista to install in the previous version of vmware workstation. I used an ISO on my desktop instead of a real CDROM drive.

That trick didn't work for vmware 5.5.2 and the Vista pre-rc1. The install hangs in the same place that you all have written about.

I wanted to learn more, so I launched sysinternal's filemon utility. It looks like vmware is very confused. It seems to be in some sort of loop where all it is doing is accessing "preferences.ini".

I am presuming that some sort of very basic startup issue is causing this fixation with preferences.ini. Perhaps vmware needs to find what ever it is looking for in preferences.ini and the install will go further???

I ran sysinternals registry monitor. vmware-authd seems to be confused about various missing performance monitoring stuff... It keeps looping and looping but never finding entries like:
