Well, I've seen several threads around here asking about VirtualCenter support for Linux, which I think is a great idea. I recently downloaded an evaluation copy of ESX3 (VI3 - whatever you'd like to call it) as a proof-of-concept for my boss. I was floored when I found out that there is no ESX3 Client/Console (or "Virtual Infrastructure Client" if you'd like to call it that) for Linux. Are you kidding?! Please, VMware, take this request seriously - there are quite a few of us Linux guys out here running ESX that don't want to also have to run Windows inside of Player or Workstation on their local PC's just so they can manage ESX3. Please, get a Linux client/console for ESX3 out soon (as well as the Linux VC clients that have already been mentioed).

I agree, we are almost a 100% linux shop so VC for Linux would be a good thing

I agree too. There is a need to have a Client to manage ESX/VI from a linux client. Many many of us work regularly with linux workstations and don't have an easily available Windows machine for administrative tasks and if they have it would be very unconfortable to switch frequently from one system to the other just to administer esx. Please release a Linux client soon!

what was VMWARE thinking ??? create a Windows Only management software to manage a Linux server ? I wonder what was the reasoning behind this desition... I'm sorry but for now i would prefer to stick with ESX 2.5 thanks.

We need a Linux version of VIC & VC, that's for sure!

A lot of the customers are more or less pure Linux/*NIX houses, they should not have to install a Windows server to maintain their ESX3 environment of only Linux VMs. Neither should they be forced to use Windows on the client to manage the same ESX3 environment.

Just adding my voice to the call for a linux client. Maybe VMWare will take notice is enough of us make noise.

I spoke to an engineer about this at VMWorld last year and he blamed it on the .Net requirement. That's an easy answer if you ask me (just don't use it) but I also told him about the MONO project which runs .NET apps on a linux host. He had never heard of it. MONO is quite stable and useful now too!

Seems to me that if they really cared they would at least be familiar with what's out there.
