Hi
We are installing VI3 on a Dell SC430 server (server was used in ESX3 beta and working fine).
After installation and rebooting, we get the error:
"Service Console is running in fallback mode. Critical VMkernel components failed to load"
Output of /etc/log/messages is included below with the main error on CPU occurring at around 11:14:03. Checked on the BIOS and there is no editable setting for the CPU ID.
From a period post
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=354646񖥖
we added the line in /etc/vmware/esx.conf and rebooted:
/vmkernel/hyperthreading = "false"
/vmkernel/maxPCPUs = "1"
This did not help.
Is there anything that can be done? Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately the DELL SC430 is not in the support matrix. Please refer to http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_systems_guide.pdf for a list of supported DELL servers.
We saw this issue on other DELL systems during the beta phase, notably the SC1420, but since there is no plan to put these on the HCL, a solution was not pursued.
Do you have any supported DELL servers that you can use to install ESX 3.0?
Thanks, but we do not have another server on the HCL.
We will have another server (HP DL145G2 SCSI, which is also not on the HCL). The specs on the server:
HP ProLiant DL145 G2
AMD Opteron model 275
Broadcom 5721 10/100/1000 NICs
AMD 8132 Chipset for PCI-X support and NVIDIA nForce Professional 2200 MCP for PCI Express
Is there any experience for this server on ESX3?
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem with 1 of my BL25p (9 of them is working fine)
Done HPs all diag tests. Nothing wrong.....
I have the same issue on a Dell SC420 ran ESX2.X fine. Guess it is time to buy a real server until then 2.5.2 it is.....
Hi
Did you check the output in /etc/log/messages to see if there's something wrong? It should give the result why you are getting this error.
Rgds
There may be a workaround for this.
You can make the VMkernel relax its check of 'checkCPUIDLimit'. By default this setting is on. The following instructions will turn it off.
\# esxcfg-advcfg -j checkCPUIDLimit[/b]
checkCPUIDLimit = TRUE
\# esxcfg-advcfg -k FALSE checkCPUIDLimit[/b]
\# esxcfg-advcfg -j checkCPUIDLimit[/b]
checkCPUIDLimit = FALSE
However, you need to be aware that the server that you are using in not on our HCL so it never went through the QA process, so there is no guarantee that you won't run into other difficulties further down the line.
I'd be interested to know if this works.
Yeap my log is almost identical to what you are reporting allowing for a different processor speed and scsi adapters.
I thought you said you were running on an SC430 your logs from about report the server as a SC420.
I wonder if it is something to do with the Dell custom BIOS that is on these motherboards as I have had other issues with my server, also I noticed you are running the A01 bios, I am running the A02 but still no difference. It is a shame that the original bios for the rebadged Intel board cannot be put back on these boards as it would possibly help solve some of these problems or alow more configuration of the bios.
Thanks for the tip.
However, we get the error:
VMKernel not loaded, all VmkCtl objects disabled
when typing the commands.
I've tried to reboot in Debug or SC only but got the same result. Is there anything that can be set in a config file somewhere to do the same thing?
Thanks
Sorry, it's a SC420. I think you're correct re: BIOS as a normal BIOS could have allow more config than the Dell one.
See if you have any luck on the esxcfg-advcfg setup.
Of course, you would not be able to run those commands without the vmkernel loaded. Sorry about that.
The alternate method is to add the following line to the /etc/vmware/esx.conf[/b]:
/vmkernel/checkCPUIDLimit = "FALSE"[/b]
On another note, we received an update from another customer experiencing this issue, and that person stated that this issue went away after upgrading the BIOS on his SC420 to the latest version. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact version that he upgraded to.
HTH
I have just checked and the latest available BIOS for the SC420 is A02, which hasnt fixed my issue.
The change to esx.conf, does it matter where this additional entry is added? I have added it to the vmkernel section and it didnt appear to work but I will retest later and post the result.
Thanks, a lot
Added this line:
/vmkernel/checkCPUIDLimit = "FALSE"
in /etc/vmware/esx.conf (it doesn't matter where) and can get now ESX3 to start properly. I did not have to do a:
esxcfg-boot -b
Previously tried to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version (A02), but it did not work out.
Thanks for all.
Hmmmm

Check that the CPUs are indeed the same. Use the CPU compatability tool located here - http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/drivers_tools.html.
thank you Hogan!!
The tools says that the AMD CPUs have differant SSE
SSE2 and SSE3
Is that the problem?
//Johan
I believe so - yes. The error you highlighting is usually attributed to the vmkernel detecting different CPU types.
The above additional setting did indeed resolve my issue. The reason it hadnt worked was done to operator error. Thanks Cormac
