I want to virtualise some CTI servers that currently use PCI sound cards for 'True Speech' compression of .wav files.
Is there an ESX driver for - say - creative labs sound cards that would allow a VM to access an esx hosted sound card to make use of 'True Speech' compression. OR is there an emulator that would do the same for a VM ?????

There is no way in ESX that I know of. You can try using GSX and I believe you can do it there.

Not even as much as a beep in ESX.
GSX or Workstation is your best bet.

I guess it would be too convoluted (and probably wouldn't work because of latency and real-time issues) to use an USB sound adapter through a Digi network-to-usb adapter... Apart from that, no, I think there is no way.

It's possible to use USB sound cards for CTI. I don't know how much performance overhead a network-to-usb adapter involves, but it actually might work.

Thats what I was going to suggest. Also, I think if you remote desktop into a computer (XP or terminal server machine) you can still have sound even if a sound card is not installed. It is my understanding that Windows does not care about the sound card installed on the server it just streams the audio to the workstation.

It is something I have been wanting to test but haven't had a chance. Sound was my main holdup for making myself a hosted desktop. Please let us know what you figure out. -David

yes, I've seen this work. In a vmotion demo, we connected via RDP to an XP vm and watched/listened to a video on it and vmotioned it without a hiccup.

Sound through RDP is another matter. The question asked here was if it's possible to use a sound card in a vm to code/decode speech for CTI. This is needed for software like Asterisk or Cisco Call Manager and other similar ip telephony software packages.
