How my laptop mocks me.
From a working state last night, I now get the error
"Application Failure hr=0x80040102: vmdb error -2: Schema path not found"
when starting VMware 5.5 RC. No interface, no options, just a friendly modal.
Any ideas on where to start? I'm thinking of just reloading and retaining my guests.

I get more or less the same thing from VMWare 5.0 on XP SP2 after installing Visual Studio 2005 RC1 with its beta dot net framework:

Application failure. hr = 0x8004012c: Vmdb error -44: Message

I haven't tried to troubleshoot it yet.

For both of you, there is probably additional information in the logfile (in user temp directory, vmware-username-pid.log) which would help narrow that down. Can you post the contents of the most recent logfile here?

Interesting.

Please file an SR and submit your Documents and Settings\yourUserName\Application Data\VMware\preferences.ini file.

Try removing (or temporarily renaming) the preferences.ini file and see if that helps.

Some additional information...

The previous log was executed as my local power user account.
I re-logged in as administrator and reran VMware Workstation and received the same error with the following error log.

Submitted SR.
Interestingly, if I rename the preferences.ini you commented on, I can run VMware one time. Once VMware shuts down it can't restart unless the preferences.ini isn't there. Seems ugly.

Okay, we're looking into the problem. In the meantime, don't hide all of the toolbars.

Are you suggesting that your UI (or lack thereof) causes abends?
I will send additional information per request.

James meant there's a bug in the UI in that build that shows up only if you hide all the toolbars. It's been fixed so this won't be a problem in the next release. Thanks for reporting.
