Windows 7 64 bit with XP Mode

Hi,

I have installed a windows 7 64 bit on the VMWare ESXi 5 Server.

Furthermore I also want to use the windows XP mode. But every time I start the windows xp mode, the network connection of windows 7 doesn't work anymore.

I have to close the windows xp mode and use the repair wizard of the network adapter. Then it works again. But if I then start again the windows xp mode, the problem occurs again.

If I try nslookup, it says that the standard server is not available...

I am not sure how the Windows Virtual PC network bridge is configured by default, but it is possible that you may have to enable promiscuous mode on the ESXi vSwitch for the Windows 7 guest to make this work.  See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004099 for instructions on doing this.

Welcome to the community.

1. Uninstall Vmware tools and reinstall Vmware tools and see if this fix the issue.

or

2.Use E1000 Network adapter on the virtual machine, if your using VMXNET2 or 3.

Power OFF the virtual machine.

Right click and edit setting

remove Network adapter

Add Network adpater and choose E1000

then power ON

now try with windows XP mode. you should not have any issue.

Hi Shardash,

thanks for your suggestions but unfortunately it didn't help.

I have tried to reinstall the VMWare tool on the Windows 7 guest system.

Besides, the VM already had the E1000 network adapter.

Furthermore  I have found out followings:

on the Win7 i do ping www.google.com -t

It works until I start the windows XP Mode, then www.google.com is not reachable.

After windows xp mode is started I do the diagnose wizard on the network adapter of win7.

The network connection is alive again. My ping works..

If I then do ping from xp mode, it doesn't work. Host is unareachable, even if the XP Mode also gets an IP Address from the DHCP server.

Then I start again the diagnose wizard from Win7. As usual, I can then ping www.google.com again from the win7.

As soon as I try to ping www.google.com from the XP Mode, the network connection on the win7 is gone again.

Besides, I still can't ping from my XP Mode.

I am also very curios, why can't I find any difference in ipconfig /all on the Win7 before and after I do the diagnose wizard ?

The diagnose wizard result is always "Default Gateway not Available".

Thanks

Are you using Windows Virtual PC or VMware Player/Workstation to run your XP mode VM?

Glad to hear it.  Let me also put in a plug for using VMware Player 4.0.2 to run your nested XP mode VM.  Performance may be better with Player as the guest hypervisor rather than Virtual PC.

Performance will definitely be better with virtualized VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI on capable hardware, but this feature is not officially supported in ESXi 5.0.

See javascript:; for more information.
