I'm in the process of setting up a new instance of Mac OS X 10.6 Server that I'll be using to support some older products that require development tools that aren't compatible with Lion (Xcode 3 only runs on Snow Leopard.)
After installing from the Snow Leopard Server disk image (10A403) everything runs fine until I go to run Software Update. It says that there are no updates available. If I try to install a Combo Updater downloaded from Apple's support site, I see "Mac OS X Server Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
I suspect that the VM is reporting some kind of information that prevents the update from working. The only difference I can find that might be causing a problem is hardware model (which reports as "VMware7,1").
Unfortunately, the tools that I need to install have a minimum requirement of 10.6.4, so leaving the VM with 10.6 is not an option.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I can't offer much specific advice, but I have a 10.6.8 VM which I created under Fusion 3.1.3, and which is now running under version 4, which is not subject to this problem. I originally updated it to 10.6.8 via Software Update, and since the last time I used it, it's become eligible for the recent Safari, iTunes, and security updates.
My model identifier is also VMware7,1. 20 GB disk, 1GB RAM, reporting a 3.23 GHz processor, running on an 3.4 GHz i7 iMac.
Shot in the dark, but make sure the virtual hard drive bus type is SCSI, the default.
Hi chockenberry, and welcome to the VMware Communities!
I suspect you typo'd, but I'll check: The released version of Mac OS X 10.6 Server is build 10A433, not 10A403. If you really have 10A403, I would not be surprised if it didn't update, and you should get the real released version! ![]()
I've done a quick test here: Fusion 4.0.2, Mac OS X 10.6 Server (10A433), fresh VM, ran Software Update, and was offered a bunch of updates, including a combo update to 10.6.8. I'm manually installing the 10.6.8 combo updater now, and it has no complaints. The "VMware7,1" model name should not be a problem.
A few quick things to check inside the guest: Does your VM have any unusual configuration (multiple partitions or multiple disks)? How much free disk space do you have on the boot volume?
Which version of Fusion do you have installed?
If you still can't get the update to install, could you kindly reply and attach a copy of /var/log/install.log from inside the guest?

Yep, for some reason the Apple Developer site had 10A403 and 10A433 available for download. I chose the first one that showed up, not the one with the largest build number. And yes, I feel dumb right about now ![]()
Thanks Darius!
No worries, chockenberry, and I was glad to be able to help. I have to also thank you for an awesome post. You patiently described the problem and your troubleshooting in good and relevant detail -- and indeed it turned out to be sufficient detail for us to immediately stumble across the cause. Perfect!
Cheers,
