At this immediate moment if you go to the VMware Player Download Page or the VMware Player Documentation Page it doesn't yet list VMware Player 4.0 so you obviously downloaded the file through the backdoor and since it it not yet available through the normal download page then I'd say it is not officially released yet.  Although it will most likely be real soon. Hello!!!!

VMware Player v4.00 Build 471780 should be released ASAP because Virtual Machines created with VMWare WorkStation v8.00 Build 471780 does not work with VMware Player v3.14 Build 385536.

Thank you very much!!!

If you're going to create a VM in VMware Workstation 8 that you intend to run under a previous version then set the proper hardware comparability!

The process of booting/loading enters in a loop and restart the Virtual Machine every 10 seconds!!! :smileycry:

It doesn't work for me either.

I do not want to purchase Workstation 8 but just want to use VMware Player.

Version 4 is not released yet. I hope they will release it before my Workstation 8 trial runs out.

It doesn't matter.  The included Player 4 that is installed on your PC will not expire/run out.  You just can't power on/run a VM using the Workstation UI after the trial runs out.

I don't see the Player 4 anywhere. Can you tell me where/how I can launch the Player 4?

thanks

Start-->Programs-->VMware-->VMware Player

Or manually, vmplayer.exe in the Workstation folder.

If I remove Workstations 8, will the Player still work?

Thanks

No, that will uninstall the whole package.

We're not suggesting to keep it this way long term... just until VMware actually releases the standalone Player 4 installer.

If they do make a release of a standalone player I might consider getting Workstation 8.

Not vice versa.

VMware does have a standalone version of VMware Player 4 on their Servers, however it is not generally available yet. Smiley Sad  Hopfully it will be soon. Smiley Happy

From what I've read, if you start Player 3.x and check for updates, it indicates Player 4 is available and lets you download it.  This was a few days ago, so I'm not sure if it still works.  In the meantime, you can download the Workstation 8 trial which includes Player 4 with it.

As of a few minutes ago VMware Player 4 is still not available as a standalone installer and if I check for software updates from VMware Player 3.1.4 it only offers VMware Workstation 8, and this is on a system that only has VMware Player installed.  Even if it offered VMware Player 4 from a VMware Player 3 install that sucks for users that don't already have it (3) installed as one would have to first download 3 and install it and then upgrade it and that's not practical as just starting directly with a v4 standalone download on a clean system.

I'd like to know why VMware has not yet posted VMware Player 4 as a standalone download yet!? Smiley Happy

As I am a devilish mood I would assume the VMplayer 4 is not release yet in the hope people would still get the trail Workstation 8.

Having the trail installed would make the "extra's" of auto-loging VM when booting up etc more visible and therefor a smaller step into getting a license simple as you already seen the perks of the Workstation 8 compaired to the VMPlayer 4 in action.

Another reason could be not wanting to have to uninstall the trail but just activate it instead.

But then again... I might be wrong.

There are plenty of users that do not need nor want VMware Workstation and only need/want VMware Player so offering Workstation when checking for a software updates from VMware Player is a bit annoying!

Let's face it, when a Free product does all that one needs, does VMware really think that by sticking Workstation in ones face, which costs $200 USD, their going to convince users that just do not need what Workstation offers to actually shell out $200, no I don't think so! Smiley Wink

As a prime example I have used VMware Player on Windows 7 just for Windows XP Mode when a client has a program they need that just will not run in Windows 7.  These clients need nothing more then to run a single Virtual Machine (Windows XP Mode) and do not need being bothered with an update notice to Workstation 8 when using and only needing VMware Player!  I'm pretty irked with this notification as I despise gratuitous advertising and will consider just using Microsoft's Virtual PC going forward for these types of clients.

No!, and it is absolutely unbelievable that one cannot just click on the VMware Download Center > VMware Player link and see for themselves that is it not yet available!  Not at the moment you posted the question or of this reply or even on Sep 26, 2011 9:25 AM when continuum started this thread!
