vSphere 5 Home Lab

Can anyone recommend a good preconfigured Desktop for a home lab? I'm looking to spend around $2000 US and would like to use Windows 7 64bit and VMware Workstation 7.x for the ESXi 5 install.

Thank you all for your recommendations.

Yes with ESxi 5.0 it can, but NOT when using Workstation 7.x with vSphere 5.0. My understanding Workstation 8.0 will support such nesting with ESXi 5.0.  Both hypervisors must support the nesting or it won't work.

@little_horse

So when you added monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE in the .vmx file, you are able to power on 64-bit guest OS on ESX 4.1 running as a VM on VMware Workstation?  This will be good news for me.

I am very confused as to what and what not can be done.

I am trying to setup a home lab with vCenter Server that needs a Windows Server.  So this will dictate if I need to load in Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Thanks so much for your information and have a nice day,

anthony.

I got it now.

Just start a VM and then load in Windows Server and the start vCenter server on that.
