Terrible response for opensuse guest

The workstation is ver 7.1.4 running on a HP 2540P (corei7) with 4 gig of ram. The host OS is WIndows 7 professional 64 bit service pack 1.

The response in the guest is frequently extremely slow. If I run top there is little cpu activity but the disk activity light is continuously on.

The system will eventually respond properly but it can take a long time to stabilize. It also will return to maxed disk activity.

Even though the linux machine is slow if go to windows the response is fine.

How I determine what is hanging things up?

Hello and welcome to the forums.

One thing to be sure to check - If you are using anti-virus on Windows, make sure that your VM files are excluded.

Good Luck!

possible reasons for very slow VMs:

  • too many virtual CPUs assigned
  • too much virtual RAM assigned
  • too many snapshots
  • growing disks are not shrinked regularly
  • vmdks with problems
  • Antivirus scanning the vmdks

we can make a better diagnosis if we see a vmware.log

I turned on logging and found that the log files contain many of:

serial0: Failed to enforce the noRxLoss option: an overrun occurred while the virtual UART was in loopback mode.

serial0: Overrun

and

serial1: Overrun

I looked in Vmware Communities but did not see an answer.

do you need serial ports ?

if not set

serial0.present = "false"

serial1.present = "false"
in the vmx-file and see if that makes a difference

I made the changes and still get the Overrun messages. I am attaching the log file.

As a general rule, attaching compressed files that require very specific applications to work with them is not really a good practice when a standard .zip archive file usually can be opened directly by the OS without having to install an application to specifically handle .zipx files. Smiley Wink
