Workstation patch for Linux kernel 3.0.0?

O.K., I know I'm jumping the gun, but I couldn't resist installing Linux kernel 3.0.0, if only because the Linux kernel has been at 2.x for 15 years.

And, of course, I'm needing to patch a few files to get the modules for VMware Workstation for Linux to compile properly. Actually, the patches I used for kernel 2.6.39 worked pretty well -- all modules compiled except the vblock module. If there are any intrepid users out there who've managed to come up with a patching strategy that permits VMware workstation to launch under Linux kernel 3.0.0, I'd love some help.

Thanks.

A later version of the patch intended for kernel 2.6.39 will successfully patch the module sources for kernel 3.0.0-rc2.

That patch can be found here:

http://weltall.heliohost.org/wordpress/2011/05/14/running-vmware-workstation-player-on-linux-2-6-39-...

It's called vmware2.6.39patchv3.tar and is in the first post in the thread.

This article is geared entirely to linux Hosts.

What if we are virtualizing linux as the Guest OS, which is what most people will be doing with a non long-term-supported kernel in the first place?

The above mentioned path does NOT apply to the 3.0.0 kernel and vmware workstation 8.0.0
