CPU architecture compatibility & interoperability for VMware implementation.

Brief about the client's requirement:

They have 2 IBM x3400 with Intel Xeon e5405 CPU & procuring a new IBM x3650 with one of the Intel e5520 or e5540 processors.

I want to confirm the interoperability between e5405 & e5520/40 CPU architecture for VMware installation & configuration.

Please go through the attachments & help us know the CPU Architecture as we are unable to find any information on web.

Can anyone please help & confirm the CPU architecture compatibility & interoperability between these 2 processors for HA, VMotion configuration & Data migration.

Re: CPU architecture compatibility & interoperability for VMware implementation.

you will need to enable enhanced vmotion capability in order for the live migration (vmotion) to work. Other than that you're good to create these two hosts under a single cluster. Have a read a below's KB, you will understand more from there:  http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212 http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1005764

Re: CPU architecture compatibility & interoperability for VMware implementation.

Welcome to the community.

For HA and Storage vMotion all CPU are compatible.

For vMotion and DRS you can use EVC (at cluster level) to have a common CPU baseline.

For FT you need to check also this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1008027
