Problems installing Mac OSX Server 10.6.3 64bit

Hi all-

I am trying to install Mac OSX 10.6.3 server as a guest in fusion (itself running on a brand new MBP). Specs of the MBP are 2.6 ghz intel core i5 with 4 gigs of ram. I have the 64 bit kernel enabled (it didnt work on 32 bit either).

I cannot find any tutorial on what I might be doing wrong. I have a copy of the server so am using the install disk. I have also tried to make a .cdr image and install from there. I keep getting errors after the disk starts to boot similar to below or stating that the vitual machine shut itself down.

"The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system."

I have left the default of 1gig of ram and 1 processor and increased to 2 gigs of ram. All with the same results. I have been scouring the internet for hours with no luck.

Can anyone help me? I know I'm doing something wrong.

The MacBook Pro is probably too new for 10.6.3, i.e. if you were to try to install vanilla 10.6.3 on it, the install would fail with the same symptoms. You could try to get 10.6.4 media (if it exists, I don't know) or install the virtual machine on an older Mac, update the guest to 10.6.4, and move it to the MacBook Pro.

Are you using the wizard? Try it without using the wizard.

Thanks for the answer Chris.

Unfortunately I had tried that as well...bypassing the wizard and installing by making a custom VM. No dice...ugh.

The latest MBPs shipped with 10.6.3.

Yes, but what build? Apple will often silently bump the build numbers on new hardware without changing the version number. The specific case I'm remembering is that in vanilla 10.6.3, the CPUID check is too restrictive. If I remember right, it was a regression from 10.6.0 (maybe even .2), so if the OP can find 10.6.0 media that might work too.

Aaah good point. Forgot about the build.

llinuxchimp, the installation media itself could be bad. Is it a disc image or a physical disc you're trying to intall from?

There is a VERY specific build for 10.6.3 on the new machines, and there never was a 10.6.3 server that will run on them. You'll have to do 10.6.4, but will need a full .4 install to make it work.

thanks everyone for their replies. I was using a freshout of the box DVD. I created a dmg and installed on my first gen MBP and all went just fine...this is the first time I've ever heard that something was TOO NEW...lol

Has anyone succeeded in installing Mac OS X Server Leopard or Snow Leopard and if so how specifically.

My test setup is a MacMiniServer running Mac OS X Server - Snow Leopard. ( Host OS )

I want to import some Parallels VMs - Leopard Server, Snow Leopard Server

AND

I want to create some fresh templates of Leopard Server and Snow Leopard Server

AND

I would like to understand what kinds of images one can use with VMware Fusion to do above work

AND

Has anyone identified a good tech support contact at VMware for Mac OS X Server virtualization with Fusion?

AND

Does anyone have any suggestions on NONE Attached Storage - Netgear ReadyNAS?

That's a start. I am stuck at a new install of VMware Fusion and nothing I know how to do is getting a VM Mac OS X Server up and running...
